Is there is different speedo drive for European 1150s?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of why the KmH speedo for my German 1150GS under-reads by 10-15% but the UK (Mph/KmH) speedo over-reads by 5-10% - i.e an acceptable and expectable amount.

I tried emailing BMW GB and was told this:

"Dear Mr Savage

Thank you for your reply to my colleague ********.

As we are not a technical office we are not able to answer your question. Our Authorised Dealerships are our technical representatives and if they are not able to answer your query they are able to submit a special enquiry. As they will be charged for this service, they would need to pass these costs onto yourself.

I am sorry we are not able to assist you further with this enquiry.

Yours sincerely

I'm still trying to recover from this email.

My question was whether there are different speedo drives for UK and Europe and, if so, what are the part numbers and drive ratios.

TIA

Richard

I think the problem is within your speedo and has nothing to do with the drive - speedo on my bike was replaced/swapped for a uk one. but as far as I am aware the cable and drive at the wheel weren't touched. it over reads the speed by around 10% which is fine by me.

parts fiche doesn't give alternative numbers for different markets either.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Also suggests that the bike had covered 10-15% more Kilometres than I thought when I bought it from SPC!

I seem to remember many years back that someone fitted a different speedo drive to bring the reading on their UK speedo to within 1 or 2% of the true value as be was a keen IAM rider.

Wretched nuisance as the KmH scale on the UK speedo is not illuminated, which I why I wanted to refit the German speedo for my forthcoming trip in France.

Can you believe BMW's reply? It's funny, when I asked a dealer about this a few years back I got totally blank looks and no help at all, and yet how long has it taken you to look at the parts fiche?

Cheers

Richard

I see BWM are being as useful as the proverbial tits on fish.:augie
The drive fitted to my 1150 has 2.82 moulded into it (same as the bevel drive ratio).
My bike also came from SPC,originally from the Fatherland.
Dont know how accurate any KPH speedo may have been, but the MPH one is very close to correct.
A simple solution may be to mark the relevant French speed limits onto the MPH scale.

All GS's originally come from the Fatherland. Even UK models.

I remember this being posted by Jimb (sadly no longer with us:rose)
I did a quick search and found i in this thread

Speedo out 10%? Total mileage out 10%??

Hope it is what you are after

Thanks.

Marking the KmH values on the Mph scale doesn't unfortunately overcome the original problem: namely that the KmH scale is not illuminated on my UK-spec speedo as supplied by SPC. Maybe that's the answer - SPC-supplied Mph/KmH speedos are faulty in respect of the scale illumination :rocketwho

I used my Zumo as benchmark for the speeds.

I will, however now that I have a value to check it against, look at the marking on my speedo drive. Can't use the bevel drive ratio as I have fitted the final drive from an 850GS for a considerably better first gear :)

But mine was an SPC import; thus it has a LHD headlamp and I have the original speedo and the German equivalent of the V5 from the previous owner.

I was thinking of Malcolm Mcreedy - or some such spelling. But that may have been on the GSCLUBUK

Fitting an RT speedo drive takes the speedo reading to within 2%

Fitting an RT speedo drive takes the speedo reading to within 2%

Thanks Steptoe

If that will make my Mph/KmH more accurate, surely it will make my KmH speedo even less accurate. What I was hoping to find was a drive which would raise the readings by, say, 15-20% which would bring the reading on the KmH speedo to within an acceptable accuracy.

Overall, I think we can safely conclude that my KmH speedo is faulty. I wonder how much Motorworks want for a used KmH speedo??

PS apologies for the double post. Cat trampled across the keyboard.

The RT drive ...

... is marked 2.6 and costs just the same as any other; speak to Motorworks. When measured against my GPS it brings the actual displayed speed (and therefore the accumulated mileage) down to within a couple of MPH of the GPS reading, which is good enough for me :clap

I see you mentioned using a Zumo....well there's your answer for the continental trip...

I always change the GPS over to kms when on the continent....you get an illuminated, accurate speedo in the correct units for the country...:thumb

to change it....spanner, Locale, miles, select Kilometres, OK....sorted..:thumb2

Thanks. I have had the Zumo a fair few years now. And, yes it is set to Km for Europe. But I'm old enough to prefer analogue over digital speedos. A needle pointing to 12 o'clock means cruisin' nicely, 2 o'clock I never achieve and 9 o'clock is pedestrian!

I've a virtually unused KmH speedo sitting on a shelf in my garage if you're interested. It came off my new (then) 1150 after I imported it from Holland a few years ago. £45 plus postage.

Thanks Mel.

Pause for thought. TBH my thoughts of Motorworks was rhetorical. If I get into the realms of throwing cash around at the moment it will be on a second hand UK spec dip beam unit. I thought that it made no difference to the performance whether my EU unit was aligned for Europe, i.e. with the line horizontal or angled up for UK riding. It's so much better in Europe that I would really like a UK spec headlamp.

Sounds good.
