Just noticed this today - is it a gearbox oil leak?

Doubt it - looks like road crud to me.

Wouldn't it be best to clean the area and then take the bike out for a run on a dry day and see if it re-appears? - if something comes out, and it was a dry run - then yes, probably.

yeah just cleaned it off there so I'll take it out for an hour or two tomorrow night and see what happens...

That 'misting' along the joint probably means the crank oil seal or the input shaft to the gearbox oil seal have called it a day

Leave it too long and oil will get on your clutch = new clutch

Sorry... I'm OK, my clutch runs in oil

the big girl is on the back of a recovery truck heading to Brian at Mototech as I type

Yep, mines off to SSB next week to have the same thing recitfied (and a replacement front engine plate thingy). My leak looks a lot worse than yours though.....
Out of curiosity, how many miles has your bike done? (Mine's 06 plate with approx 13k).
Hope you're back on the road soon!
Dave.

I think you're over reacting a bit if you think you needed to get the bike taken to the dealer on a recovery truck. I've seen evidence of leaking seals alot worse than yours.

crap news Dave :(

keep us posted re. costs assuming you're out of warranty - sounds like Brian'll do a good job anyway.

Thanks for your opinion. I work 9-5 and the bike technician (not a BMW dealer) is 70 miles away. Now I could have taken time off work, ridden a bike that's leaking oil at the risk of contaminating the clutch OR I could lift the phone to NCI, say please come and pick my bike up at no cost to me and take it to Mr Jones who's going to fix it.

Over reaction or common sense???:thumb

Yeah he's certainly got a good reputation and so far he's been very helpful. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg....

Mine's booked in for the same next month when I get back. It's a '04 bike with 15k on it and out of warranty. Got a quote for the work from the local dealer for removal gearbox and replacement of seals, wasn't as bad as I thought! Hopefully the engine output seal and the clutch is is okay as I only have a light misting around the housing faces, otherwise it will start to get expensive. Let us know how you get on.

Bike sorted. Got the 24k service done too and the bike has NEVER run as well - running sweet as a nut!
I'll definitely be back with Brian. :clap
