is what a sign? the discolouring? dunno. wouldn't have thought so.

get a bit of clearance on the gaps, and try waggling the valve stem.

bet the exhaust guide is worn - they always are.

That IS the exhaust guide.

Best sign would be blue smoke on the over run. Like others have said, not sure if the discolouration is valve guide wear. I would guess it's more a sign of the "hotter" side of the cylinder head discolouring the oil.

I can't see the picture but I'm guessing its the discoluring of the top of the cylinder head with the rocker cover off? I had it on mine, I wasn't burning any oil but as I didn't know how old the valves were and I was bored I changed the vales and the guides at the same time. Once the springs were off I found that I did have a bit of play but nothing too scary. Changed the guides at home (not so hard) replaced the valves and everythings fine. I have no discolouring at all now so summat was slightly worn I guess. The local "Experts" wanted to charge a fortune to do the work hence the reason I did it chez Sylvester. Plus I took my time and cleaned everything up at the same time. Depending on how mechanically squeemish you are, it wasn't too hard to do but stunk the house out as I had the heads in the oven to get them hot to drive out the old guides.

I agree... with both the smoke and the discolouration points. My hard ridden R80ST started to smoke noticeably on 'extreme overrun', e.g. redlining in 2nd and backing off between hairpin bends sort of thing - fitted unleaded seats at the same time as new valves 'n' guides.
