Hi,

BMW R1200GSA - 37,000 miles.

I have a leak and I wonder if its just an annoying leak, cheap to fix.
Or the hugely expensive final drive replacement?

Thank you all in advance for any comments.
Adam.

just looks like the outer seal to me,

does it make nasty noises when you turn the back wheel?

£20

Outer seal and plastic cover from the dealer...

10 mins to fit, no problem..

Roger.

There will of course be a reason the seal has leaked:

Wear to seal

Overfilled oil - increased internal pressure (oil volume dropped from 220ml to 170ml by BM to stop this)

FD bearing(s) failure - causing movement of seals surfaces

I'd get it checked out. Good luck..........

I have had this happen, first time was sign of failure- dropped the oil and it was all grey metallic and stank. Got a replacement drive and it did it again the other week.drained the oil at the weekend expecting the worst - used oil but not black and no metal bits. Quite happy that all is OK.

Wouldn't worry too much, but get it checked anyway for peace of mind.

yep mine had been over filled and blew the seal. Oil was good and I filled with 170mm and its been fine since 4k miles later

Had mine go exactly the same when I was touring Devon & Cornwall last year. Popped into Oceans (Great Service - slotted me in straight away) and they simply replaced the outer seal - c£70 all in & fixed a treat.

that seal is about a £10er and a 15 min job, sounds a bit on the dear side to me. robbin bas ds

rear drive

I had the some shit service with my BMW dealer. £447 to have the rear drive re-built but they said there is a little bit of noise still but do an oil change and see how you go.. yes i did 8 miles and went straight back. CAN ANY BODY SORT THIS REAR DRIVE OUT WITH OUT PAY THE £1000 FOR A NEW ONE.

Steve, this is a bit confusing. Are you saying they rebuilt your drive and it's still noisy or are you saying that's what it will cost to fix?

Yes. Iv payed £447 to have it fixed and it's still making a noise

Something wrong there because a good rebuild would cure the problem and is much better than a new drive. I'd be dropping that on the doorstep and asking for it to be done properly at no cost......

I think I’d call that fair and good service considering I’d not be carrying a spare seal and outer with me, better than spoiling the trip anyway.

If you had the tools and ability, you could always buy the parts yourself and fix it in the carpark. Measuring back in the right amount of the correct oil might be interesting… :comfort

You lose very little oil as it's only misting and it always looks worse than it really is:thumb
