Istanbul to Italy

Thanks Waldin. I'd just come back on the forum to say I'd found that and, while it's not routable, it did enable us to find all the places piskoGSA has suggested which, in turn, helped us find them on the paper map so at least I have a paper route to follow and waypoints from which I can get a general direction :).

That looks a nice route piskoGSA - much nicer than we had planned. Thanks very much, we do appreciate it.

We like to prebook our hotels a few days in advance so, if we dawdle on the way (as we often do!), we haven't got to try to find a hotel with a vacancy when we arrive late in a town. We're planning to stop 1 night in Drama, the next night in Edessa, 2 nights in Kalambaka then the following night on the ferry. Does that sound reasonable?

Well let's hope it does as I've just booked the hotels!

sorry for the late answer but I couldn't get to a pc thoughout the weekend

Your bookings sound ok and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

From Monday I could be following your route closely.

Try not to miss anything from the route indicated if the time you have to spend is enough..

cheers

Hi piskoGSA, we cheated a bit on day 1 as it had been a long day so we took the motorway to Xanthi then headed up into the mountains to Drama rather than continue on the main road.

We pretty much followed your route exactly on the second day which was a long day - we got to the hotel around 20:00. Unfortunately we both eat or drank something on our last day in Turkey that is disagreeing with us - especially me! The combination of upset stomach and heat was pretty debillitating and by the end of the day I was having trouble hustling the bike round corners and Lyn had to help me get it upright from the stand :(. Cracking roads and scenery though :).

Today I felt worse and we didn't manage to get away until around 11 so I took the decision to head straight for the hotel in Kalambaka. We arrived about 14:00 local time and I've been asleep all afternoon so I think that was a good call.

We're going to hole up here for a couple of days to let our stomachs settle then follow your route to the ferry (which we must get around to booking!).

Thanks again.

Oh it's not that bad, I think we've got away lightly - only one upset stomach in just over 4 weeks of travelling through various countries

We've seen some great scenery and roads since we got in Greece thanks to your directions. Even today we came through an excellent mountain pass :).

I'm sure we'll be back.
