I made the schoolboy error if filing up with DIESEL this morning. :blast
It doesn't run so well, and smokes like a steam train. What an absolute idiot!

What do you think, will I be able to simplty disconnest fuel pipe on both sides, drain into a jerry can, fill up with petrol and run it through for bit to clear?

Any thoughts / experience welcome, thanks.

PS: Before you start, I know how stupid I am. :augie

Depends on how much diesel you put in, I did it on my K1300S and rode it off, I mixed petrol in with it. It ran rough for two tank fulls but gradually got better. I can't remember what the ratio was.

No long term damage as it was 12000 miles ago.

Personally I'd drain it, pump some fresh petrol through and try it. But it's your engine so it has to be your call.

oops.

:comfort

I personally would drain all the diesel off, run petrol through and change the fuel filter. *

If its still running, dump the fuel and fill with Petrol. There is no replaceable fuel filter in a 1200, its just a screen in the tank which is part of the pump.

I pumped thirty odd litres of prime French diesel into my GSA in France.

I did NOT start it up.

Syphoned it out (mostly, it's not esay at the bottom), fouled the plugs. Put in new plugs.

Fired (just) ran like a pig for few miles. Smoked like a battleship for 90 litres worth of prime four star.... all was well thereafter. Bike and engine still going strong in the hands of ChasMill.

The diesel is oily and heavier than spirit based petrol, which floats on top for a bit. It coats everything, including the filter screen. Hence the smoke. It fades away... and you rather miss it after a while.

You could use the fuel pump (FPC) workaround to PUMP the diesel out... :thumb2

As always you have proven to be invaluable sources of facts, ideas and funny stories, thank you. I'll let you know how I get on over the weekend.

Thank you.

what oil are you running:pullface:(:clap

Did this to my car, that was 60litres of petrol in a diesel. The nice man who pumped it out said the injectors would have been damaged if I had run it for any length of time. Probably worse with petrol in a Diesel engine than the other way around, but I would properly drain it and refill with petrol.

Had a knock on the door one wet winter night. A soldier asked for help as he'd put petrol in his diesel car and it was running rough. As I drove him to the local service station, with my empty cans in the boot, I asked him what he did in the army. He hesitated and I wondered if it was somthing secret, then he sheepishly told me he was a mechanic, on diesel vehicles. I smiled and asked him if he'd be telling his mates at work what had happened. He said, probably not.... So we can all do it.

Hope it recovers OK after refilling with petrol.

I did the same a couple of months ago. Could swear that I didn't but the receipt says otherwise. The bike gasped - it quickly dawned on me so I stopped. Got rescued by RAC and then to BMW. Drained and new plugs and a contribution of a couple of hundred notes to the garage. I'm a much wiser person now. I think I was distracted by a female getting out of a car:D

Keep an eye on the oil level in the sump, as some of that diesel will have run past the rings and into the crankcase. You shouldn't have damaged anything, but you may want to do an oil change after getting it back on the proper fuel...

I did the same years ago with a V12 Jag!
