My bike broke down to the extent I had to call out the rescue people. Was the Hall effect sensor... classic symptoms - rev counter bouncing at 'power up' - so a quick call to motorworks and a brand new one is on its way to me. And will be fitted on Friday.

They offered me a second hand one for £80 or a brand new one for £146. I opted for a brand new one, purely for some peace of mind. (will see if I can get the broken one 'fixed' - later)

So just posting as its such a remarkable experience to have broken down.

The 'rescue man' said - "we dont see many of these. BUT we get 1200s almost daily always the same reason FPC or EWS."

but why oh why couldn't the thing have lasted just another 10 minutes.. it broke down as I was turning into the MOT station - sods law strikes again.

Quite funny in retrospect.

Bu**er!

Sorry to hear your 11's let you down Tony - hope the fix goes smoothly.

Take some pics - I'm sure with my current luck I'll have a HES in my future sometime soon :D

Mine was the sidestand switch, I had only owned the bike for a few weeks so I was still in the familiarisation stage, embarrassing, first time for the RAC man too, never mind, the replacement should do you for a while :thumb2

If you decide to repair your old sensor plate and it turns out that the actual sensors are u/s rather than just the wiring, apparently, these sensors are the ones:

cheers

Cheers for that. I'm going to pop the old sensor over to a local bike electrician and let him take a look. See if it can be refurbed - either rewired (which Im assuming is the problem... or indeed have the sensors replaced. Be nice to have a spare i can rely on. Paying £146 for what is a simple piece of kit is painful and not something I intend repeating. I'll obviously post on here the results.

(I think a properly refurbed HS should be a better bet than buying a 2nd hand item for £80 (which was what Motorworks were asking)

Numpty question but where is it and what does it do ?

Numpty question but where is it and what does it do ?

basically it lies behind the (black plastic) front engine cover and controls the ignition timing. Due to its position it can be 'broken' due to excess engine heat which mostly affects the wiring. This is one very good reason why allowing the engine to idle at a standstill is not such a good idea.

part no 1 on this picture.

and this is the thing itself. (definitely NOT worth £146 - but its crucial to the bikes engine)
