bought this 88 r100gs about two months ago from the original owner. 19,000 miles been sitting idle with gas in it for over four years.
cleaned the carbs, bought a new starter that i didn't need, cleaned the petcocks, removed the clean air system, attempted to clean the gas tank myself (probably the worst one i've ever seen!), that failed. took it to a radiator shop locally who did a fantastic job for $140.00.
kind of ran out of time and patience after weeks of waiting and loaded it in my truck to take to a local independent shop that had done work for me before.
after it was loaded up i remembered a couple of things to take along including the front engine cover. thought i would throw it on the real quick, big mistake.the obvious happened, touched it against the diode board with the expected results. burned wires, small fire, popped diodes, etc. just another calamity that reenforces why i shouldn't bee allowed to touch tools.
anyway, all is well now. my mechanic fixed my mistakes, fine tuned a few things, cleaned the brake system.
my god, what a nice bike. certainly the best airhead of the ten or so i've owned.
i'm not bragging but i can honestly state this has to be one of the nicest original bumble bee airheads in existance, appearance wise and mechanically. under all the cobwebs and four years of dust i found theres not a scratch in the paint, a scuff in the plastic, zero corrosion. the frame shines like new.wheels and spokes are corrision free.
this bike starts instantly, idles great, pulls strong, shifts and stops like a 19,000 mile bike should. great bike, worth the hassles, temper tantrums, and excessive $$$ spent getting it right.
excuse me please, time to ride.....
