I've peaked too early.

Further to my last post reference our forthcoming ride through France, Switzerland, Austria and then Italy to Lake Garda, there is crucial bit of information that I am worried could be a show stopper.

We are thinking of doing this around the first week of May 2009 and it has just dawned on me from reading other material on here that the famous passes that we would want to experience on the trip are most likely to be closed.

Could anyone confirm that May is just too early, or do you think there is a chance of success?

I'd guess early May will be too early as the famous ones will be the high ones.

An idea would be to look at the Michelin map of the area, as they show when the pass will be closed, or the Michelin website.

It confirms my thoughts in no uncertain terms,

We have had many emails along the lines "I really want to ride the Stelvio/Grimsel/Iseran, I'm going the first week of June, do you think I'm mad". Quite frankly, yes.
