Yes & yes. Worked a treat & is so p*ss easy to do that it's causing Apple stores a real headache as they are finding all their display phones jailbroken... :D

A useful & regularly updated list of iphone4 compatible apps via Cydia & Rock is available HERE

Yep, just done it myself. Had to re-purchase wyfi but at $10 I can live with that. Pity that cycorder doesn't yet integrate with OS4 as I'm using a 3g phone so have lost video capability at present.

Carrier unlock was released this morning, for those who've jailbroken their phones. This means you're no longer tied to using your O2 data roaming when you travel abroad if, like me, you like to have a local SIM when in the IOM or USA or wherever...

Open Cydia, search for ultrasn0w 1.0-1 & install it - that's all there is to it. Once your done, reboot the phone & it's unlocked.

BTW, if you jailbreak your iphone, it is exploiting a loophole in the pdf handling that is a gaping hole (& always has been on every iphone since day 1) in your security that it would be wise to keep an eye on. It is a loophole that unscrupulous hackers could use to get malicious code into your phone. Everyone is being advised to go to Cydia & load an app called PDF Loading Warner as this will at least notify you if a webpage, email, etc, are trying to load hidden stuff onto your iphone via this method & then gives you the option to terminate before it gets chance to do so. It's not a block but gives a chance to deal with it before any problem starts, whereas Apple have just left the hole & not even given you a tool to help control it... A bizarre situation that means you are less secure with an unjailbroken iphone

iphone 3gs 4.0.2 here

Apple loophole closed

Can it still be jailbroken or have I missed the boat?

Please educate me. I have an iPhone 3G and use it for a bunch of stuff (syncing files, Skype, email, Wikipedia, Google news, vicinity searches, navigation apps, Kindle etc.) what compelling things could I do with a jailbroken phone that are worth the hassle?

Exactly! I'll have my unlock code from apple within a week.

Should I bother?

Unlocking from O2 via ultrasn0w is just one of the benefits of a jail broken iPhone. I'd suggest doing some research via google, but I can appreciate that the volume of results means there's so much that it becomes difficult & off-putting, so I'll give you a link to a recent article & a few other items to check out:

In addition, there is a really useful free app called SBSettings which allows you to access recently used settings via the springboard (Applespeak for desktop).
Two others that allow very clean multitasking on pre-4.0.1 iPhones are Proswitcher & Backgrounder.
