I know its a small island for a mile munching GS, but does anyone have experience of Jacksons B*W in Jersey? We're kind of limited in choice here, and any feedback on this dealer would be appreciated.
I used to live in Jersey (many years ago) and back then Jacksons , who were based on the Rue des Pres Trading Estate then , were a bunch of tossers who knew nothing about bikes but sold them because they held the BMW total franchise for the island. My advice to you would be to buy your bike on the mainland and have someone like Bob's Motorcycle service it for you. Bob , if he is still running his shop in Gloucester street, was a keen mechanic who cared about bikes. Jacksons just wanted your money. Things may be different these days but somehow I think they are much more interested in selling X5's to mum's to do the school run up to De La Salle each morning that paying much attention to GSers with globe trotting aspirations .
In regard to having a GS rally there......I don't think so - max speed limit 40 mph - and island that 9miles long 5 miles wide - one big traffic jam. Not the best location for biking unless you like driving in heavy traffic
Lovely island , lovely beaches but after living there 8 years I was getting serious cabin fever
Gecko, I am afraid you are probably right about Jacksons, as not much seems to have changed since you were here. This is the kind of service that you get in a monopoly situation. I'll have to consider importing, or at least getting the bike serviced elsewhere. (Bob's still around!)
I would love a GS meeting here, but you are also right about the speed limit and traffic - I reckon most of these guys would be a little frustrated with our slow roads. I get a bit of cabin fever too :cockeye , but France is only 13k away (and an hour on the ferry) and that's where I get the speed bug out of my system.
Only 13k to France but it costs and arm and a leg - Emeraude Ferries - another monopoly problem, I remember it well. We used to take off to Le Mans a couple of times each year but boy was that short ferry expensive. I am going on the Eurotunnel to the Uk this weekend - just Euro 44 return (30 quid) - now that I can cope with.
As i live on the better channel island(Guernsey)i thaught iwould give my opinion on jacksons as we have to use them over here as well . I have never had any problems with them since i got my gs new from them in march but now the bike is due for its 6000 mile service and i dont want to pay them £62.50 per hour to service my bike so a long weekend to either cw or spc is on the cards. Just to let Gecko know emeraude no longer have the monopoly as condor ferries now run on the same route . I have just got back from 10 days in the alps and condors price was £98 for a bike and two people. I do belive that condor sail out of poole and go via the channel isles to st malo so people in the southwest might want to give them a try.
Why not come over to the Isle of man then? Go as fast as you bloody like here over the mountain! Shame you have to sell your bike to pay for the ferry tickets!
Jersey, great Island for peace and quiet, few bikes about mostly peddle type but a few mbikes went to Bikers @ Cheapside. Saw a black GS parked outside a bank type office block that was the only one.
Black GS parked outside bank building in Jerseymust have been mine!
Strange comment about Jersey being good for peace and quiet. I'm spending time in Devon to get real piece and quiet.
Back on topic of dealers:
Jacksons are typical large BM dealer and customers have to help pay for new £3m building. Owen from Bikers was in dispute with them over service costs on his R1100S. He thought it was just a minor service but they did full works and he got mega bill. They have improved a lot in recent months with new After Sales Director called Richard. As a whole they still know far less about bikes than my mother does.
My old R80G/S went in for a service many years ago just after I had sold it on and they charged the new owner a fortune to change all the non standard bits back to "approved" BM bits and told the new owner this was needed for safety purposes which was rubbish.
I would also be very wary of Bob's. On my old G/S he fitted the front brake caliper incorrectly causing the front wheel to collapse at 70 mph in the Alps. I also got the bike back with no oil in the gearbox after a full service and he suggested it must have all leaked out on the two mile trip home.
I think you will find nearly every GS owner in Jersey takes the bikes over to France for serving to the dealer in Rennes.
I'll be back in Jersey next week and bringing the R1100GS back to Devon for the winter months.
