Guys and gals,

Not sure if South East best describes it, but South West definitely doesn't

Work is moving down to Swanwick on the south coast, between Southampton & Portsmouth, junctions 8 & 9 of the M27 eastbound.

Basically I'll be getting a paid move down to the coast and out of Greater London :bounce1

We're not "live" until October 07, but I want to start looking at where to live as the window for moving starts soon and there's a few hundred of us, so I'd ideally like to narrow my choices down and be ahead of the game.

And who better to ask than a bunch of tossers :D

So, can all you guys and gals based within the red dotted line start recommending me nice places to live, and places definitely NOT to live, which may be easier :mmmm

Parents moved down to Christchurch last year and I do like that side/New Forest etc, but open to suggestions as I don't know the areas at all.

Ithankyouverymuch :thumb

Who made me Swanwick red then?

Bit more info. Singly, tho available for pantomime, so schools aren't an issue (yet :eek )

Currently in a 3 bed semi with integral garage worth around the magic £250k mark. Work do have a "betterment" policy, so I could probably go up another 10%.

Would love a detached house, don't necessarily need 3 beds, bigger garage or workshop type thing, traditional build (sick of stud walls), rural'ish location (ie not too far away from civilisation) a nice village green with a cracking pub serving great food and beer, where everyone cries out "Jon!" as I walk thru the door to the freshly pulled pint by the busty barmaid................but you can't have everything :mmmm

I hear there's a good bakers in Andover.

Might sway your decision...

I could be tempted, but I'd love to live a bit nearer to coast. Plus the commute to work for a 7am start

I'm currently 6'ish miles and 15min dash (including getting past the guard :D)

I realise I'm gonna have a longer commute potentially, but the location would be worth it.

okay..........................who's just un-reddeddeedd me Swanwick then. Who's muckin' arand :)

I'd move to Brockenhurst - if I could afford it :(

Cher-ching!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a 3 bed semi in Fathersfield for £255k - No garage and ex council by the sound of it.

I thought to myself this will be easy, no problem at all (i thought)

However because the area is quite busy, there are little micro communities of good and bad, of the Winchester area, you can avoid Stanmore and areas local to it with confidence, however buying anything nice in the area will cost lots (mid terraced houses with a cobbled yard nodernised but not immaculate will cost £450-500K in Winchester City Centre, Personally I dont like the portsmouth/gosport area much, but the Meon Valley just north is loverly :thumb Southampton/Eastleigh has nice areas but i'm sure there are more local tossers that will advise on those.

If i was in your position I would look in the New Forest Coastal (ish) area, Maybe New Milton or similar, or even Romsey, I would buy the best bit of land I could afford with an underdeveloped house on it, location, location, location as they say

Good luck

Shep

Hi Jon,

Not that clued up on the area myself - but as it happens Im moving to Headley next week. Its a nice little village about halfway between Alton and Petersfield (near Bordon). £250k will buy you a nice semi there. They're building lots of houses in and around Alton. The houses look very nice, but I dont know how you would feel about these new build estates (they can look a bit faceless).

If it was my choice, I would avoid Southampton and Portsmouth as much as possible and try and live somewhere on the Western side of you map. Wiltshire and New Forest way, very nice old England countryside (dont forget your regimental tie ;)). Dont understimate the traffic on the M3/M27 though - could be a potential pain to get to work.

Cheers,

Mike

With the stupid hours we start :D Don't think it'll be too much of a problem, but will still take it into account.

I have a beach hut at Milford on Sea !

Jon,
I would have a look round Bishops Waltham area and the A32 corridor. If you want cricket on the green, Hambledon claims to be the home of cricket.

And don't forget all the bloody pikeys in the area, bordon is a small town/ village with a 1500+ person garrison, full of 17/18 yr olds (I know, i have to work there!)

Hi Mate

I'm just moving myself. Have a nice 2 double bed semi-detached house, garage, garden etc etc in Titchfield Common (about 3 miles from Swanwich) which will be renting out as of 1 March. Will be looking to sell about the time you are moving down.

Give me a shout if you are interested.

thanks for that :thumb we have the option of renting. failing that, I can put your details up at work for the other 500 moving down

Titchfield is nice, Gosport/fareham area is shite I lived there for years got out and never want to go back ever. Luckily the old folks moved away so no need to now.

I'm a bit out of date, but I grew up in So'ton and the folks still live there. I head down regularly and still have a few old friends in and around. General comments. I'd avoid So'ton as a city completely - dire place. Generally nicer to the west of the city than the east, but beware the M27 for commuting. That said there are some nice villages etc to the NE of your new work location. Try in/around Droxford / Swanmore / Bishops Waltham. Not sure what your money buys though!
