Hi all,
I'm having a long weekend visiting friends in the west of your island 31st Aug.... I'm travelling from Rosslare to around Listowel, prob' via limerick. It looks like the most practical route. My question, are there places to visit on the way that I shouldn't miss. I'm arriving on the early morning ferry so I have most of the Friday to get across to the weat coast. Wouldn't like to go sailing past any poi's that I find out later I could of stopped at?
Any suggestion considered.......

Regards

Terry

Head across South Wexford to the Ballyhack ferry.
Keep towards the coast through county Waterford (Copper Coast)
Head for Dungarvan you can skirt North of the town picking up Killarney signs to Lismore.
Head North across the Vee to Clougheen & on to Cahir & Tipperary town (it's not a long way really). Head South into the Glen of Aherlow & West through Galbally & on to Killfinnane - Drumcolliher & Listowel.
Well that's what I would do.
Do enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestion

Well, GerryC
Traveled today, went the way you suggested and............. wow what a lovely route, especially that coast road and over the hills. Took me about 5 hours in all. Gona ride back from Listowel area to Dublin Mon Morn' ..... any thoughts on that one?
Thanks again for that one

Not as nice as the last route but: -
Take the N69 via Tarbert & Foynes to Limerick.
Bypass Limerick following N18 & M7 signs.
Stay on M7 towards Dublin to junction 27 – Birdhill.
Take the R494 to Ballina, Portroe & Nenagh.
Follow the N52 to Borrisokane (R turn) & Birr.
Some nice sweeping corners along here.
Take the R440 to Kinnity & over the hills to Mountrath.
Follow the R445 to Portlaoise & rejoin the M7 for Dublin.

It will add more than an hour but beats the road more travelled. :thumb2

Dear Gerry.......

Any chance I could impose further on your already generous knowledge and ask if we could have these two routes as gpx files?

I've a wee trip planned from Waterford to Killarney (using it as a base for a couple of days touring in the area on the bike). How would you vary your first route if you were heading for Killarney rather than Listowel?

You're in the area so why not pop over here tomorrow.

Apologies, have only just popped back on..... missed this one. I was over in Feb' and did the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle and many other parts but did go round the parts where your going. Would love to have gone for a ride round that area. Sadly not this time. I do pop over a couple of times a year to visit friends, may be next time....? Thanks for the invite though....

Again GerryC thank you very much :thumb2
...Superb trip across the country.....was a bit later than intended that day so most of it was in the dark, which made the trip "over the hills to Mountrath" quite exciting! Pick up quite a bit of wildlife (still have that with me now)
Your help is most apprieciated...wouldn't of been the same with the suggestions
The trip on the south coast 10/10 and rightly as you said west to east north of the M7, I'll give that 8.5/10. Still so much better than the M7.
I did do a short trip on Monday morning from Dublin to Bray to find Platinum motorcycles and with there suggestion I went into the Wicklow Mts (Laragh) and back to Dublin before me ferry at 14:30.
Home now:type
Look forward to visiting again soon.

Hi Andy
The original GPX files were too big to post here & I deleted them.
If heading for Killarney follow the route to Kilfinnane; they head for Ardpatrick, Churchtown, Kanturk, Rathmore & Killarney.
You will put it together no bother yourself.
Hopefully you are not gone yet - I was away climbing in Skye - hence delayed response.

Perhaps the next time we meet.
Ireland is an ordinary painting in a magnificent frame - the most interesting bits are @ the edge (by the ocean)

Thanks Gerry. That's great. I'll plot it tomorrow.

Coming over on the 21st and heading for a few days in Killarney and then back to Cork for a bit of live entertainment before coming home on 26th.

Really looking forward to it!

Can you sort the weather as well as the roads?!;)

Well - just back from 6 days on the Emerald Isle!

Got to say a BIG thank you to GerryC for his route suggestion from Waterford to Killarney. A great route/ride and great weather to boot!

Spent a couple of nights at Castlerosse Hotel and Golf Resort just outside Killarney - staying in one of the bungalows they have on site. Negotiated a great rate with the management and we had freedom and flexibility as well as access to all the facilities.

Did the Ring of Kerry and met a bloke who lived on Valentia Island. He sent us over on the ferry from Reenard Point just outside Cahersiveen and then to the Bridge Bar at Portmagee for lunch. Absolute highlight!

After that, dropped down to Clonakilty for an evening at DeBarra's! Troughed at Richys and stayed at O'Donovan's. Would recommend it all!

Then back to Cork with a night at the Jurys Inn (best bed all week!) and a night out at The Oliver Plunkett listening to The Lee Sessions - the only live music in the city centre I could find that night.

All in all a very successful trip. No eventful moments apart from a puncture (bl@@dy KTM Adventure's with an inner tube! Only had a tubeless repair kit with me for my BMW!) which Clonmell Motorcycles sorted out pretty damn quick!

We'll be back!!:thumb

Now visiting 1st -5th? 6th Aug

Gents and all.....
I'm coming back over in August. I'm over for the IFS (Irish Festival of Speed) the first weekend in August. I'm making my way, starting from Rosslare and aiming for Listowel. I'll take the same route as before (earlier in this thread kindy donated by GerryC) unless there's another unmissable route I should venture along.
All replies apprieciated....
Going to make my way over on the earlier morning ferry on Thurs 1st so I have all day to get to Listowel by what ever route..... :blagblah:blagblah

Regards
