BMW's software update did more than turn the neutral idiot light from white to green, it actually did something useful, too.
The A and B trip meters used to zero themselves at 1000 km's, which is 621 miles. This was despite the rest of the system being configured in imperial (as opposed to metric) units.
After the update, the two trip meters now keep on counting until zeroed manually. I had guessed that they might zero at 1000 miles and start again. But no.... They keep on going....
