This weekend I decided it was time to find out why my 1987 K100RT wouldn't turn over on the starter. Of course, after checking the starter motor, starter relay, fuses and wiring I think I have tracked it down to a battery that doesn't want to give its all when you hit the button. As I had the tank off, and had read in the manual that the fuel pumps do not like dirt (the bike has sat for a while), I thought it best to have a look-see inside. Finding the fuel level sender and float furry with rusty looking crud I thought I'd remove it for cleaning along with the fuel pump. Now I find the rubber boot holding the fuel pump has completely melted in the fuel turning into a rubbery sludge that has coated the pump and its internal support.
My problem is this - what the hell do I use to clean this crap out of the tank now and is it worth doing? Just looking about the net I can get a second hand tank (hopefully with internals?) for $150 while a new rubber boot costs $160-$180 and a fuel pump over $500. Should I just bite the bullet and get a complete second hand tank or will it probably be in the same condition internally? Anyone else here had this problem?
