Hi

I am having problems with my starting on a 1200 GS
When I put the ignition key in the switch and turn on the LED display fires up but thats all the bike is effectively still dead /immobilised.

This seems to happen after the bike has been standing for more than a day.

It normally fires up properly after 4th or 5th go and then you can turn it on and off normally all day long.

I guess its something to do with immobiliser and key recognition but am worried that one day it wont work at all and its bound to be 200 miles from home in the pouring rain at night etc etc

Any suggestions?

Sounds like the ring antenna on the ign switch, its been a known problem on some 12GS's, so if its still covered by a warrantee take it to the dealers.:(

If its not covered you may be the first to repair one yourself (don't forget to post a 'how to' thread:D )

Could be the ring antenna, or you could be one of the people that is unlucky enough to have more than just the BMW key on the keyring and that plays havoc with the EWS

it's a really easy repair appart from getting it to bits...

The thing costs about £20-25 it's plastic 2 long screws hold it in place undo old life the whole plastic bit off and the (force) gently replace with new unit.

I problem I could see to get to it you got to take the whole front end to bits or get the light off.

Not so easy to change the ring antenna...

Handlebars off
Upper fork bridge off
Lock off - "one way" fasteners - has to be drilled out
New unit on
Replace "one way" fasteners with new BMW ones

They did it on mine GS yesterday - 2,5 hours work - paid by BMW

I have the answer thanks Terayon

The bike come with Panniers which have a different lock the key was on the same fob as the ignition key and I think must have been confusing the system

Thanks for the help anyway
