I'll be visiting my old pals in Dundee over the weekend on my K1200LT, but none of them are bikers, so all roads are just something to get you from A to B in the car.

I haven't been up there on the bike for a few years, so fancy a bimble back home to Manchestershire on Sunday, avoiding the usual A90/M74/M6 route home. ( I can do that any time in the cage)

I'm thinking of going back over the Tay bridge and through Fife. I may stop over at Falkland for lunch as I always liked it there at the castle.

So...any suggestions for decent roads away from the madding crowd across Fife that I can take to just drown in the secenery at a sedate pace on a K1200LT please?:aidan:aidan

It depends on how happy you are tackling goat tracks on that barge.....:nenau

Goat tracks........barge............does that mean stick to the main roads perchance then? :D Or just that the Kingdom of Fife is a goat herd's paradise where tarmacadam has yet to be introduced?:D:D:D

It means that I could point you down some great twisty, bumpy bits of road with the odd bit of a gravel and perhaps a few potholes. I've seen similar stuff done two-up on a K1200LT but I'm really just trying to establish what kind of roads you want to ride.

Ones where I can perhaps just wallow (pun intended) about making progress without needing to use my off-road skills (which are non-existant on the LT), so single track roads are fine, as long as they don't degenerate into gravel/farm tracks.

Cheers :aidan

OK well.....if you're planning on lunch in Falkland, I'd then head over Falkland Hill to Lesley on the unclassified hill road. Turn right on Lesley High St and take the A911 to Auchmuirbridge. Turn left over the bridge and immediately turn left onto the unclassified road to the B922 at Kinglassie. B922 through Cluny to Kirkcaldy to Beveridge Park where you pick up the B925 through Auchtertool to Crossgates. B981 to A921 to A90 over the Forth Bridge.

If it were me, on an LT and I were heading back to Manchester, I might then be tempted to take the easy but still enjoyable option and take the A7 to Carlisle - no fixed cameras but watch for unmarked cars particularly around Selkirk and Ashkirk. However, on the GS, I'd turn off onto the B707 just East of North Middleton, to the B709 to Langholm, stopping at Samye Ling for tea and a pee. Then A7 to M6 (if you must) at Carlisle.

And to avoid confusion, use the correct spelling of Leslie. :blast

Many thanks Schtum!

Plotted and written out for the tankbag

If you do take the B709 just beware that there are some monster potholes on it and a fair bit of gravel strewn around some corners. I was down that way last week. However, it is worth it. Apart from it being an "interesting" ride and beautiful countryside, also to stop at Samye Ling. When the monks first went to Johnston House in the 60's the countryside reminded them of Tibet and they decided to establish a monastery there.

also worth a look is the a701 from the edinburgh city bypass down to j15 of the m74 via moffat

used to commute to fife from barrow was my preferred route as a good mix of twisty fun/time of journey

more scenic i woud go a720 (edinburgh bypass) then take the a68 jedburgh road to corbridge, head west on the a69 then take the a686 from haydon that takes you all the way down to the a66 and j40 of the m6 at penrith

a good mix of twisty but fast a-roads with a couple of hairpins on the a686 to liven things up a bit

its the way i used to commute when i had the time

whichever you choose, enjoy

oh no not another Foreigner

I'm thinking of going back over the Tay bridge and through Fife. I may stop over at Falkland for lunch as I always liked it there at the castle.

It's really called

Falkland PALACE by the way.

It's one o' the few places with a ROYAL TENNIS COURT.

Mary wiz sae proud o' it.

The coast road is not bad but, MY GOD, is it slow !

If you are going that way and you fancy a break, head for the Secret Bunker.
Well worth a visit and they do a good Pie & chips in the canteen.

and Sssshhhhhh - don't tell anyone....it's a secret.

The Palace is only one building in the village of Falkland!

I did it backwards

I went to Dundee yesterday (Saturday) and set off early, so I got bored at Carlisle and decided to take the A7 to Edinburgh. I got well and truly lost after trying to read Schtum's directions backwards from the tankbag, starting at the M6 and reading from the bottom up!

Made a few U turns ( not easy on small tracks on an LT) after observing the compass on my 'bars was pointing in the wrong direction.

Anyroad, had a yahoo time, and got where I needed to be on time with a big daft grin on my boatrace. None of my mates are bikers, so no one quite understood why that FEB at the bar was grinning like a twat.:D:D:D

Sadly today, the weather was dreich (sp?) and so I stuck to the main roads, over the Tay Bridge, A92 to the M90, over the bridge then the usual route back to Glasgow/Carlisle.

Got bored again at Carlisle and came off the M6 for the A6 and down over Shap. Feck me! Mist that bad I could hardly see my hand in front of my face and blowing a gale. Loads of arse clenching fun. Then down into Kendal, and back to the M6 to pick up time.

Thanks for the roads advice, i WILL be back in summer and will do more exploring.
