Hi hope someone can help,

The bike runs well and pulls like a train:D problem is when I take her over 70 mph:augie (allegedly, your honour, ahem) she runs like a bag of sh*te.:eek
it feels like she (:topicwhy do we refer to our bikes as "she":nenau) is running out of fuel and starts to die but then picks up again, then to repeat this scenario maybe 20 to 30 seconds later

If the bike does cut out then there isnt a problem restarting.

This happens regardless of how full the tank is and usually on a run - motorway/dual carriage way situation. Once at destination and riding around off and on road the bike is fantastic up to about 70 and beyond.

bike is a KLX 650 C1 model.

very gratefull for any help.

OK, check these in this order.

Take fuel cap off and try to copy the fault. (don't have tank full though to prevent spillage). Possible tank breather problem

Fuel tap strainer. Remove it from tank. There is a long tubular gauze filter that gives the 'ON' and 'RES' levels also. This can get blocked and when under full load, ie, max fuel requirement, the gauze ain't letting enough fuel to flow. When you stop the float bowl level is resumed by the trickle that does get through the gauze, hence it restarts.

Drain or remove float bowl. Check for a bead of water in the bottom, just enough to foul the main jet. Main jet is used for the last 1/4ish of the throttle action, so on full throttle the bike dies due to water not allowing venturi effect to work up main jet/emulsifier tube.

Carb fuel pump diaphragm. Check for splits/cracks in neoprene diaphragm.

Tip petrol over it and set fire to the fecker, checking first that the TPF&T insurance is up to date..... only joking!;)

Let us know if you find anything above helps.

Timpo.

Thanks for all that, and so quickly:clap

I tried the match scenario but with all this rain..........

Thanks again, will give it a go and let you know.

Right then, all checked, except the ride with the fuel cap off - Ive got the kids while SWMBO is working.

diaphragm seems ok, no water in the float nor any signs of emulsifying (spelling?) and the tubular gauze seem clear, although there were small bits of debris on the outside of the gauze and i didnt get the impression that they could themselves cause any blockages. They have been removed and gauzes cleaned.

To the untrained eye every thing Ive checked seems to be fit for purpose.

before I refill the tank with fuel is there anything else I should check?

off topic Timpo, but how is life with a Tenere, my mate picks his up next week and really looking forward to it.

Thanks again,

Has the gearing been changed? (is it running out of puff at the top but 'pulling like a train' lower down because the sprockets have been changed deliberately to do that I mean)

sounds like fuel, but check the air intake is clear also, incase

Hi,
The sprockets havent been changed by me and it wasnt mentioned at the point of sale. I think I understand what you are driving at but the problem I am getting is similar to when one runs out of fuel and needs the reserve switching on, does that make sense:confused:

Digger, when I did the checks advised by Timpo, I did notice that the air Filter looked dirty. It's a KnN filter, is there a specific way of cleaning them as ive heard that you may need certain oils for the filter:nenau

2 be honest , i clean mine in petrol, then a light oiling (if i have any), half the time , i use none ,a quick search on google will show the correct oil,
it does sound petrol related though, float hieght??

:clap Thanks to you all for the advice.

Dont know what the problem was but after doing all the tips the bike runs great :bounce1

Also the bike has just been sold on fleabay, the man has got a good bike and lots of bits :thumb2 Me........I pick up my 800GS bumble bee on Tuesday:JB:drool

Thanks again:thumb2
