It's a 1993 KLX650 C-1.
Bent the valves through not adjusting the manual cam chain tensioner,
chain jumped, valves kissed piston.
Straightened out the old valves, put it all back together with new
shims for correct clearances and got a very good reading on the
leakdown test, so compression is good.
Retimed the valves.
Spark is good.
Fuel bowl hieght adjusted, three times to be sure.
Plug is wet after I try starting it.
Petrol is only a few weeks old.
Carb stripped and thoroughly cleaned and then blown through with my
compressor, reassembled and ajusted as per manual.

WTF else can I try?
When I first tried it, she fired up for a few seconds. then nothing.
Gimmie some clues please? where do I look next???? :nenau

thanks

hah, just checked that again with the leakdown tester Dig. Got an even better reading this time.
I'm stumped!!!!

How did it run when it first fired? smooth or rough?
Did it stop by itself or did it baulk when you touched the throttle?
Is the timing deffinitely right?
Try taking the plug out, put a teaspoon of go go juice in the pot then warm the plug with a blowtorch, quckly screw it back in then give it a go.
That was the only way I could start my CR500 in the winter:D
If that works then it's probably mixture related.

It fired up for a few seconds only so it was difficult to tell, then cut out and hasn't gone since.

The plug is wet if I remove after trying to start it. so there's plenty of juice getting in there.
I removed the carb and checked the float level again last night, put the strobe light on it and cranked it over on the starter and seemd ok, not ideal I know but I'm grasping at straws and trying to eliminate everything I can think of.
Tried another leakdown test and it's up to around 93%, seems to be imroving, but the bugger still won't even try to start.

Wildbeeste,
I tried "Damp Start" last nite, it's just an ether type spray I use occasionaly in winter for me diesel tranny, but nothing.

has the camchain jumped a tooth?
i know youv checked em 3 times but did u check carbs as per manual, iv fixed a lot of bikes where this was causing probs.just a thought

I checked the cam chain again Dig to make sure it hadn't jumped, it's fine.

I suspect the carb but dunno why really, I put it back as per the manual but if I've got good compression and a good spark at the right time then what else can it be?

Millard this is a wee bit dodgey "BUT" remove the aircleaner tube and leave the rear or the carb exposed

Stick hand over carb and hit starter try not to let any air thru

The Porpoise of this is that it can't draw air from anywhere including the crankcases so it sucks like a hoover on steroids and IF you have a wee blockage in the carb it can sometimes pull it thru?

The other purpose is that when you lift your hand away is it coated in a film of petrol ??

So say on the second or third rotation raise your hand a bit to let some air in sand see if it kicks JUST be ready to get yer hand off there and hit the kill switch if it does go

You wouldn't have timed it 180 degrees out could ya?

Hiya
Sorry for the delayed response, I haven't been in site for a while as I'm at me brov's place down in Spain. I managed to get it fired but not running well enough to ride, so I'm thinking I did somethin stooopid wi the carb when I cleaned it, like left something out maybe. So I saw a real cheap one on ebay for 40 quid and had it delivered just before I left for Spain. I'll have a go at it again later in the week when I return and let you know what I did wrong.
Cheers for the suggestions and Happy New Year.
