Hi, I am a newbie, tosser, etc. I currently ride a Yamaha 1300 FJR and do an amount of [European] touring each year. Whilst I generally like the bike, particularly the engine, I have two issues with it that are making me contemplate a GS. One is the weight [290 kg] and the other is the angle of the knee bend when one is sitting on the bike. I tend to get sore knees over long distances, say 300-500 miles per day. I am interested to know if the GS has a less acute knee bend angle than the R1200R. Whilst I think it inevitable that these mileages will give your sore knees, and like most touring riders I see, I spend time straightening my knees, standing up to stretch, etc. I believe the GS [and maybe the R] have a less severe knee bend angle than my FJR. Question is: is one better than the other?
Many thanks for your collective help.

I was able to do 500 miles a day no problem on both my R1100R and R1200R, without any aches or pains. Any time I pinch the 1200GS it's just as comfortable. You'll find the issue could just be your leg length and a higher/lower seat would adjust the angle of your knee and solve the problem. I always have raised seats for this reason

I have had both bikes, from memory the gs will be more comfortable, but they are both good bikes, the best option will be for you to demo both the dealers are normally very accommodating.

R1200GS shows 82 degree knee bend, 0 degree forward lean for a 6' 2" rider with 34" inside leg
FJR1300 shows 74 degree knee bend, 9 degree forward lean for a 6' 2" rider with 34" inside leg

R1200GS would APPEAR to be a more open knee angle ...

The website is good - choose your bike and your dimensions and have a play, but no substitute to sitting on the thing, and most dealers will allow test rides.

Good luck.

Thanks, geotim and others for your very rapid responses. That web site looks interesting, I'll be on it shortly. I am off to the Bike Live show on Thursday and will be giving both models a try. Appreciate your help here.
Cheers!
