Has any of you Guys tried knobbies (TKC's - Karoo, etc.) on a 19" rim - F650GS Standard ?

...and how do they behave off road ?

...Is there a huge difference with the 21" ?

I am considering whether is worth to give it a go, rather than having to buy the whole kit (21" wheel + brake disc ).

Thanks for your feedback :bow

The 21" wheel is the standard for off roading, so it is without doubt the best solution.

However, you me and half of the off roading comunity, would probably struggle to find the limits of a 21" wheel and would bearly notice much of a difference with a 19".

I off roaded my 1150 with a 19" wheel and it was fine. I prefer the 21" as it's narrower profile is better in mud and ruts, but if it was the choice of £0 for the difference in tyre costs, or mucho pennies for a 21" wheel, I'd give the tyre a try first.

The 650 is a capable bike off road, but it's no where near as good as a KTM. At what point do you say feck it and just ride it, accepting that it is what it is???

I love my Dak, it's a great all rounder. Many with a 19" say the smaller wheel is better on the road :nenau Personally I have no issues on twisty roads frightening the local leather wearing wildlife :D:D:D If that conversation is anything to go by, buy ya 19" knobbly tyre and go and have fun :thumb

Apparently I need an 18" wheel at the rear for a better choice of tyre :nenau Personally, I have so far not stopped smiling with my shitty tyred 17" one :augie:augie:augie

I tend to agree with Flip above, but I have both the standard GS and the Dakar. Both these bikes are shod with Continental TKC 80s.

The 21" front is definitely better off road than the 19". However the 19" with TKC fitted is IMO the better choice for all round use, as it gives quicker handling on the road (Flip, you'd be able to do even better when taking on the Power Rangers :thumb) 'even with the TKCs'.

If you're new to off-roading, you won't find the 19" limiting in any way. If you are already an off road God you will probably be getting shot of the GS for something lighter and more agile like a WR450 or similar.

Val.
