Correct me if I'm wrong, but the big n black knob at the bottom of an Ohlins shock is for "compresion" damping ?

I'm struggling to find a compromise between comfort and handling at the moment. The Ohlins has tightened the rear (ooer misses) but I find it a bit harsh, even with the pre-load on minimum.

Big black knob (ahem) is for rebound damping only. The Ohlins shocks as fitted to the GS do not have a compression damping adjustment.
What weight are you ?. I can give you my setting later on tonight if you wish. I am a skinny 15 stone nude ;)

I'm a lithe 17.5 stone, but your settings would be a good starting point.

Ohlins Settings

Stef

These are my settings. They work very well for me. Loads of confidence in corners and on the power while leaned over.

Front

Max front preload (see photo). The adjustment collars are wound up the lower threaded piece to increase the preload.

Rebound : 12 'clicks' off the maximum setting. You will feel these clicks as you rotate the black adjuster. Feels like a notch (you may not always hear the click each time). Note that max is achieved by turninmg the knob in the direction of the arrow shown on the photo. Same applies for rear rebound damping adjuster.

Rear

Preload 7 'quarter turns' off max. A quarter turn is one 90 degree rotation of the wrist as this is all I can get on the remote preload adjuster at any one time.

Rebound : 10 'clicks/notches' off max.

I am 15'ish stone (nearer 16 but don't like to admit it). These setting work very well for me (and I ride it hard). For heavier ( more robust ;) ) people, I would suggest increasing the rear preload a bit more, say 4 'quarter turns' off max and trying it there.

Good luck !! Let me know how you get on with these settings.

Bloody hell that must be a hard ride...........do you get any feedback?
That's a lot of preload........have you set the sag correctly?

Not hard at all. Not as soft as standard 10 year-old BMW suspension but much more compliant than any sportbike's.
Plenty of feedback. Can leave GSXR1000's for dead on bumpy back-roads round Cork.
Sag is set as close as I could get it to the Ohlins recommendations. Anyone else who has ridden my bike has been very impressed by handling and confidence given through bends.

Thats the next question how do you set the sag on an Ohlins

The sag recomendations out of the Ohlins book seem to require far to much pre-load...

I'm 13.5 stone and use 3 full turns on the back and wound the front up about 2 mm from delivery spec.

As for rebound I can't rememeber! but I found the Ohlins advice of going 4 clicks then ride and droping back two if required work well.

In summary mines set up soft and damped for control over bigger compressions which is great for the roads I ride... the only down side is it can compress down on ripples and will kick it's tail when going over small humps... aka speed bumps! (It's never a problem for me though)

Sag for a normal bike (non GS)

Ohlins sag set-up : Note this is for a typical streetbike, not the long travel suspension as in a GS. The figures for sag are too small for a GS

Found that my rear sag with me onboard is 30mm regardless of pre-load. The pre-load only jacked the rear of the bike up, but it still compresses 30mm
