So I picked up my new 1150 this week and I've got a few peculiarities I was hoping to be set straight on. I've got a wierd double knocking noise when setting off in first gear. It doesn't seem to matter if the bike is hot or cold, it's just as the clutch is about to be fully relased. It's not easy to explian but there's a knock followed by a smaller one and away we go, it happens 95 pct of the time. I've tried serching for it but I seem to find cam chain noises but this is more a transmission noise. For the record mine's a 02 plate single spark with 22K on the clock, and it's had the cam chain mod.

Is it ABS version? Could be that setting itself - occurs once you move off, sort of like a 'ker chunk'. Doesn't happen every time, bike had to be stationary for a certain time for it to do it. Maybe that's your noise?

It is a ABS bike and it does sound like a ker chunk kind of noise. You're correct in it does it when the bikes been in neutral but it doesn't do it when shifting down from second into first and then driving away!

Sounds like abs setting. It happens when the front sensor detects you moving off. Put your mind at rest by putting bike on centre stand in a location so that the rear wheel is above the ground by an inch or so. Place in gear and release clutch. Get a pal to hold up the back end if you're nervous and hold on the front brake too. If no noise, then it's the abs!

You might also hear it taking off from a full stop later in the journey. Note if you don't hear the clunk clunk the abs might not be on and a restart is required to get it going again.
