As for the bike (that is "coming out soon" for the last 12 months), this is no GS (or 950Adventure) alternative. It is the "next step" from Duke2. Duke2 is a motard bike though, while Duke990 is a pure 1lt street fighter. Competition is much tougher there. Kawa Z1000 is one alternative I can think of and there are others. Available now, probably cheaper. Look nice. Good luck for KTM (erm, in fact I couldn't care less).
Not my kind of bikes. You cannot do much more with them than "be proud" of how well you skip taxis, how fast you brake (endo of course) when the red light comes on, how faster you are from all the city's 650-singles and such.

Given it's spec sheet I'd say it's much closer to the (very bitchin') Triumph Speed Triple '05 - the 1050 cc totally new 128 bhp/85 lb ft (at low revs) Trumpet for next year (expect to see it at the NEC).
I don't mean to detract from the GS model, obviously, I was just a bit taken a back by the audacity (which I whole-heartedly applaud :-D of KTM).
It'll be like the Multistrada I owned last year - great fun to ride - not so nice to own. I could elaborate but knowing me I'd easily blow a thousand words!
If I wanted a fighter I'd give the Speed Triple the nod next year, but I don't. The GS does pretty much 100% of what I want. The fact that everything 'works', it's well built, my dealer is great, social scene tops and the resale is laughably high - are just all major bonuses!

anyway no, I am not that stupid, I don't even try following 100+ HP bikes with my Dakar

I'd go with a Triumpg Triple, the original street fighter and still the best looking in my opinion.
