My business server has suddenly started switching itself off, so much infuriatingly so that I decided to change machine, swapping a few of its bits and hard drives into another identical machine

Unfortunately the 'new' machine is suffering the same shit down issues

This new machine has the following common parts:

UPS supply (It gave an error bleep a couple of weeks ago, but no longer shows error lights).. Easily by passed for testing

DVD writer… unlikely cause

Tape drive…unlikely cause

KVM monitor sharing switch…. Problems did start the day after this switch was fitted, but the fitter does not believe that this is the cause. I am highly suspicious in view of the coincidence

C drive and Slave Drive………perhaps

Two RAM chips

Can anyone see why a KVM monitor sharing switch could cause a machine to shut down?

I will sort this issue by process of deduction, but it may take some time :(

Sounds like the “new” machine is basically the old machine with a new motherboard, CPU(s) and power supply. There are a lot of common components there.

If you suspect the KVM has something to do with the shitting down then remove it from the equation by eliminating it altogether. Stick a display, mouse and keyboard onto the server and see what happens.

My guess is that the shut down issues are caused by the memory. Remove one stick at a time and run the server then see what happens.

Good luck.
