No problem when I have panniers fitted, but when you take them off to go offroading (or even pop into town) you leave behind auxilliary tools, first aid, bike lock, bike manual, whatever.

There's not enough room under the seat, especially as I would also like to simplify my electrics by fitting Nippy Norman's Centech auxiliary power fusebox, then refit my autocomm, add an on-bike charged PMR radio...

Yes, I know you can carry stuff in a backpack, but ideally I would like these in a fixed placed on the bike so I don't have to mess about constantly moving things. I've given up on top boxes as they bounce around too much off road and end up falling off.

My ideal storage should also be secure and lockable so things are still there when needed, and also reasonably accessible when other luggage is fitted. My best thought so far is to mount a pelican box to the pannier rails, inboard of the right pannier, somewhat like Roger P's 'toolkit' at http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88936 (pic below)

Not very easy access, but hopefully access won't be needed too often. I've had a look at the Pelican cases: http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/size_guide.htm but they are not idea sizes for the available space. The 1120 is narrow enough at 90mm, but quite small. The 1470 *might* fit at 106mm but the other dimensions are too big.

Any input?

Hi Tim,
I'm not sure this is hugely relevant to your question, but I've used otterboxes for a number of years diving in salt and freash water and found them brilliant for storing keys, money, etc (you dont need much else underwater).

They work great, I've used them repeatedly up to 30-40 meters (4-5 time atmospheric pressure) never a leak. They got a lift time warranty, the first one I bought in the US, broke a seal I got shipped a replacement box and a seal to fix the old box... hows that for customer service?

I've got one. It's an emergency 1st Aid kit. Too small for what Tim has in mind I think.

Tim,

I had the same issue's with my 1150 Adv. Solved it with a Jesse top-box mounting cubby al a MikeO.

I plated the top, fitted a TT rack. The cubby takes a fair amount of stuff.

Bolt an ex army ammo box on the carrier and put a bolt through with a hole for a small padlock.

Style? Oh yes, sorry this is the 1200 section :P

I've got a 1400 pelican case mounted on a boxer design tool box cover fits on where the back seat fits. You could mount it the same on a 1200 :thumb
Here's a few pics :D

Why not try this? I used this pelican box set up, mounting it with the 12GS mouting equipment for the passenger seat top box. The 12ADV is different but the concept is the same. I plan on doing something similar for my HP2, albeit a smaller box. I used this all the time, it was solid on and off-road. :thumb

Appreciate the responses. I had already discarded the idea of mounting a box in the pillion position as it's either occupied by a pillion passenger or a very large luggage roll. Tail bags ditto.

I used to have a Jesse top box mount storage box which fell off somewhere in France (see earlier comment about top boxes).

I like the idea of mounting behind the number plate, especially as I already have the bracing bar from the 12GSA pillion mounts.

Tim....I bought a steel petty cash box, drilled it out top and bottom and bolted the top box mounting plate on top......

The top box sits higher if I'm using it, but it's not too high, and without the panniers or top box I still have a lockable steel box to use.

TBH the one I have on now is a bit pants...it was only a cheap one and isn't waterproof, but you can get dearer ones (or even one designed to be a document box safe against fire) which would be much better.

There was a thread about it way back...a quick search should turn it up if yo're interested ;)

Tim,
Just got mine back so I'm able to be a little bit more constructive now...

I don't know what rack you have on the back, but mines got the standard 12GSA rack, there looks to be plenty of space between the rack and the rear light to fit one of the slimline otterboxes and strap it to the underside of the rear rack. I've not tried it, but it looks like you could get a fair bit of storage if you could find something with a similar footprint to the rack itself.

Actually... I'm sure I saw a number plate mounted first aid kit either here or maybe up at the bikeshow... sorry, only just remembered that one.

The other place I thought you might be able to hang something was under the beak, but it might just look stupid...

God, my mind has really started working now... TT have some sort of storage that fits into the tank crashbars... I think its fabric, but you might be able to fashion something more substantial...

Sorry, bit late, but I got there...

John
