I'm off to Lake Garda and just wondered if anyone could recommend a good hotel in the area?

My list of wants are - located in a nice location, within easy walking distance of a town centre, bar and restaurant,mid-priced and secure parking would be nice.

Am also after which places within a 50 mile radius are worth visiting

Thanks all

Not quite a hotel but there is a campsite called BELLA ITALIA, they hire out static vans and lodges, the site has its own access onto a sandy beach on the edge of the lake and is just 10 minutes walk along the side of the lake to a town called PESCHIERA DEL GARDA where there are numerous eateries and bars, it is also the main hub for the lake ferry and you can visit any of the towns on the lake via this ferry.
A must visit whilst at Lake Garda is a trip to Venice, cant remember the exact mileage but it is in easy distance for a day visit.

hope this helps:thumb

Firstly, I wouldn't bother with a day trip to Venice when on a motorcycling holiday. The roads & scenery around the lake are far too good. Go to Venice on a cheap flight for a weekend if you want to see it.

Places to visit: for me the northern end of the lake is the best. Spectacular scenery and some excellent roads that climb up the steep valleys.

Of the towns around the lake, my favourite is Malcesine. Lots of narrow alleyways where you can find little bars and restaurants. If you fancy an afternoon or morning off the bike then take a cable car to the top of Monte Baldo.

On the opposite side of the lake is Limone. A charming little town. It even has a beach should you fancy a dip in the lake. We used the excellent passenger ferries to get between towns.

The mountains to the north of the lake are fabulous. I took the SS241 from Riva to Molveno and further north, then back down via Madonna di Campligio. My son seemed a bit worried on some of the single track roads with no barriers and a big drop off. I loved it.

I can't really recommend a hotel as we used a cheapie from Expedia on the outskirts of Limone. It was okay but quite a walk down a steep route into the town centre. Hotel Limonaia. Of course, the height above the lake meant it had superb views. The other place I've stayed is Torbole. A very small town with a few hotels and a nice atmosphere as it is popular with a younger, watersports crowd. That was several years ago so the hotel we used may not be of the same standard.

Lake Garda is one of my favourite places. If I returned I think I would bite the bullet and cough up for a decent hotel in central Malcesine.

Italy is brilliant, with lots and lots of unexpected but pleasant diversions around every corner. I was staying in Vermezzo a couple of years back while watching the European horseball championships at the parco agricolo sud milano.

The B&B we had was the most unassuming small place in a tiny village, and somebody said we should take a look at the old monastery around the corner. It was totally deserted and not even sigposted, so you can imagine my surprise when we stumbled across this impressive "ruin".

The roads around Garda and Maggiore are great, but watch out for italians overtaking liberally on the wrong side of a blind bend. The tarmac tends to be shiny and slippery too IIRC.

Mup.

Consults Tripadvisor

It gets very good reviews - rated 4th out of 90 hotels in Malcesine.

I'll add it to my list of possibilities for a future trip, thanks. Looks like you need to book well in advance. I tried a few dates and the place seems booked out.

oh, yes, another thing - you know the Guzzi factory is on the *other* big lake?

As wessie says: have a look at Limone sul Garda, is small and lovely (you'll be touring around anyway).

I've been there a few years ago for the annual meeting of the QdE forum (similar to UKGSer). It was me and my ex-gf at the time. I can't find the name of the hotel but it was really clean and the personnel extremely polite (something I am not always used as an italian... ).
I'll try to find the name and post it here.

Also, you might want to go here:

We stayed at a bike friendly hotel we just spotted as we rode by.

Hotel Garni Toresela

http://www.hoteltoresela.it/

They have secure underground parking, nice rooms, wifi and theres a good Mexican restaurant across the road (I know it's Italy). Nago is set above the town but the hotel prices go up the closer you get to the lake and it's literally 3 minutes ride down the hill.

yes I visited the factory last year, just going back next year with my Guzzi to get a photo at the factory gate (is that a bit sad? :D )

I can think of worse reasons for a trip!
Am heading that way myself at some point this year.
