Not sure which section to put this in, but here goes...

I want to take my laptop with me on my trip. It's all solid state, so no moving parts (bar the screen of course). I might be over thinking it, but has anyone else stuffed their laptop into their panniers on a long trip and experienced any problems? I'm thinking vibration of course.

Any thoughts?

I had my laptop in the Laughing boxes (read the report for an explanation) of my old Guzzi riding around in spain without any trouble... Come to think of it i also took it on the GS on one of the morrocan dashes, 2009 i think..

I've commuted with my laptop, in a laptop bag in various panniers and top boxes with no bother... Old school HDD as well....

Been doing it for years, including much dirt riding. Bumpy rides and engine vibrations galore. My laptops have had solid state drives and regular hard drives. The only drive that failed me was a SD drive years ago, go figure. Other then that none of my puters ever failed me on my rides. I have my laptop in a lightly padded pouch in my metal cases. I make sure the computer is packed against the flat side of my bag.

My Macbook Air has done about 20,000 miles (including up and down the Dalton and other assorted lumpy North American roads) over the last couple of years just stuffed in a neoprene slipcase and left in the top box without suffering any ill effects from either vibration, heat or cold.

I ride most weeks with the laptop bag stuffed into one of the panniers and my suit etc in the other, no special padding or anything and it's been fine for many thousands of miles, if it does bother you or worry you stick it in a neoprene sleeve, that will damp most vibes out.

It'll be fine. They're designed to take worse vibration than will be found in your panniers.

Clearly I was worrying unnecessarily

Amazed to hear what some of you have put them through! I'll be stashing it in a pannier, in its soft/padded case.

Thanks for the feedback. This evening was my last chance to dump it on the missus (she's taking the plane!). Looks like I'll be taking it myself

Bubble wrap.... I made an envelope out of some...
I've got some hard core bubble wrap. Think I'll put the laptop-in-soft case between some of that. But reading all this, I'm not worried anymore . I've never had a laptop before! Hence me asking.

Same as mine but mine's done 20,001 miles on the same roads:P

I've taken lap tops everywhere and even twice on the TAT with no issues. Just get a decent case, put it in your luggage and no problems:thumby:

Not quite a laptop, but my iPad has survived many miles in a pannier without incident. On Chris's Dalton trip, the iPad was fine, where my glasses had fallen apart in their case! :nenau
Thankfully the stores there had a glasses repair kit to save me trying to reassemble them with the point of a penknife.

Soft, neoprene case off the 'bay for £6 - there are loads of different patterns design - I have the peacock feather one because it is bright and easily seen. 13" screen ACER, nothng fancy and it has been all over the country and some rough tracks, I can't say offroad, not really, forest roads type off road, but gravelled. Fits in the topbox or side panniers of the 1150ADV perfectly. Just pad it a bit with your socks or stuff.:aidan

Something like this:

Completely OT I know, but nearly all Pound shops sell glasses repair kits.....they're about the size of an old fashioned match box and you get some of the tiny screws, a didi little cross head driver and a couple of the nose pads.

A good buy for a quid if you're a glasses wearer :)

just trying my crush-drybag in medium
waterproof and with a useful carry strap

No need to worry, seven years of being stuffed into my pannier, over all terrain in a standard laptop bag along with my Nikon DSLR in my tank bag. That has to be a kiss of death for me. :blast

Thank you all for the feedback. Bought a Plemo case, but mostly because it was really available (in off next week).

I'm impressed with the feedback. I would have always thought a pannier was a expecting a lot. But having never had a laptop, I really want sure!

Cheers

As said above cheap neoprene case :thumb Large size cheap ziplock bag goes over that in case it gets dropped in a river, then gets stuffed in with clothes for added 'cushioning' :beerjug:
