Anbody got any advise on buying a Laptop for personal use.

Spec, price & retailers etc.

Many thanks

Define your useage.

Do you want to play the latest games? Watch/copy DVD? Edit video? These all require a powerful machine.

However, if you just want to surf the internet, using a wireless network, whilst sipping Chablis on your patio then the machine spec could be lower.

Give us a clue and I am sure the answers will be forthcoming.

If you are not sure what you want then let me know. We can spend an hour kicking tyres in PCWorld before finding the same spec machine somewhere else for xx% less.

Wessie's right.....need more info on realistic useage.

The gap 'tween laptops and desktops has shrunk so much now that a laptop can easily replace a desktop in terms of power but still be portable.....

One thing that could be important is battery life........if you just want to be able to take it out in the garden for an hour's typing in the hammock then it's not critical, but if you want to use it on the train, for a few presentations and then run it for a couple of hours wirefree, it limits your choices of processor and models significantly.

PC world have a DVD-writing equipped jobby out on offer now for £699.......don't know what the rest of the specs are but TBH that's remarkable in its own right.....12 months ago you couldn't buy a stand-alone dvd writer for that, let alone a laptop to house it as well and a processor man enough to power it!

I wouldn't buy a new laptop now.......they are churned out regularly by the image conscience 'latest toy' brigade and sales reps/companies so frequently that you can pick up some amazing 2nd hand deals, and worry less about obsolesence and dropping the fekker to boot.

WAAAA!!!!

Just looked at the page I linked above ...was looking last week but just as an example, a pukka, new SONY VAIO K115B

Celeron, 2.8GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 15 inch TFT display, DVD/CDRW, MS WinXP Home, Weight 3.3kg for £699 +VAt...now that's Schweeeet!!!!!

I am very happy with my Acer Aspire 2000 now at 1400Euros. Centrino, wifi dvd cdrw 15,4 TFT screen it is the bees knees. But here in belgium you can get really good portables from 999Euros including vat. I just wanted the larger screen for certain programs I use for work. Plus all the XP software uses things called "Task Pains" (pun intended). So it is nice to have the extra width.

If you don't like acer I understand but for 200Euros extra they give a three year warranty including spilling coffee on the keyboard. So I'm feeling safe.

Personaly I would not buy a celeron processor....
