Hi to the all knowing,

Have had three trips into Europe over the last couple of years, and swimbo is getting more adventurous.Having been nearly caught out twice over weekends, I am looking to increase the fuel tank capacity, what are the options. I understand I can fit a GSA tank to my GS 1150 without too much drama, and that Touratech do a very large tank (but that not all of its capacity is usable), are there any other options out there. I already have a small 2 litre bottle but hate bits hanging off the bike, I would prefer a largere tank capacity. I know now I should have bought the GSA but life is what it is.

Hi Moses
How many milkes do you want to do between fill ups?

The first simple fix is to mod the filler neck on your standard tank, this will get around another litre in, (do a little search for pic's)

The standard ADV tank gives you about another 10 litres and puts the range upto 300-350 miles depending on your right wrist :D

I managed to get the TT 41 litre tank off another tosser on here, and can easily do 380 to 400 miles before re-filling.

It's important to remember that the bike will be more top heavy with a bigger tank.

Raginmud is thinking about taking his ADV tank off, so might be up for a deal.

not wanting to open a debate about miles per tank (there are plenty on the site already), I can honestly say, I've never had 300 miles out of an ADV tank on my 1150. 230 and the light comes on. 250 and I bottle it and fill up. Others I would be with would get 180 (from a standard tank). I think this may put things in perspective before you get hung up on needing a bigger tank and spending a wedge of cash. Loads of other comments about this sort of thing, so you can do some numbers first...

I've got an ADV tank on my standard 1150 and i once got 360 miles and still had four bars showing on the fuel guage :D. Mind you, that was riding along at 40MPH day after day with 8 C90 scooters in morocco ;)

I can fill my tank in london and reach lands end on one tank full. Which is 300 miles, i've done a few times as Tiff used to have a GS event each year.
My tank has the filler drilled. Plus i've the very high geared gearbox. That makes a big difference.
A few years ago on the way back from morocco with shapeshifter who has an ADV with the lower top gear. Both riding along together for 1600 miles through spain and france, at each fill up he was putting in 5 liters more than me and his engine was 500 revs higher at the same speed.

Thanks for the information,,not quite sure I understand drilling the filler neck. The main reason for wanting larger capacity is not just for greater distance between stops,(though I hate filling up on the motorways) but having been caught with two closed fuel stops and ending up buying fuel out of a drum in northern Greece late on a Sunday, and having spent time searching for fuel. I would just feel more comfortable.

Thanks Moses

I do a bit of touring so I put an adv tank on my 1150, best thing I did. It was a black tank on a mandarin bike so has a bit of a bumble bee look.

Hi Moses
Unless you're willing to stand there for ages filling up, the drilling of the filler neck allows you to get the last little bit of fuel into the tank, effectively giving you about another litre capacity as there is no air bubble stoping the fuel going in.

Try looking ar eBlag Germany as ADV tanks do come up
