Las Vegas - what a shit hole!

We stayed for a night in Boulder City on our way to Monument Valley...

...Had planned to return to the South West Diner, but decided to give the Boulder City Supper Club a try. Absolutely excellent!

Funnily enough, @Arsey has that very same favourite diner in Boulder city!

Plus, some kind of fan-boy in Vegas!

It used to be great. Gamble and get everything else on the cheap. Not any more. MBA types slapped a charge on everything and ramped up prices across the board.

All changed for the worse and I don’t enjoy going any more. It’s always been for work and I’ve been about 15 times. It’s a shame to see it alter and worsen over time.

But it’s the same in many places. Venice and Porto 25 years ago were beautiful. Now every street has a shitty little Bangla shop with leering, jabbering staff selling utter shite that no one wants.

The British high street has a similar malaise. Vape shops, nail bars, off licences, charity shops, bookies and low grade fast food takeaways are everywhere. Awful and degrading everywhere they spring up.

And no one with any power has the balls to fix any of this. From that twat Burnham down to the staff in your local council. All of them, largely inept and utterly ineffective.
If nobody wanted them, they’d not be making money, and therefore wouldn’t be there unless they’re a laundering scam, and it my guess that nobody sets up a laundering scam in Venice where the rents will be astronomical.

So I reckon they’re making money, probably from dozy fuckers buying tat.

The real reason our high streets are full of shitty little tat shops is Amazon, and online shopping more generally. They’ve simply captured the profitable parts of the high street, and left the landlords desperate to have some income from a Turkish barber, rather than their assets boarded up and depreciating even faster.

You can blame Burnham, national or local government if it makes you feel better, but the root cause is online shopping.

Agreed. I haven't been there in years but it used to be cheap to fly to.
I don't gamble and I can't stand the place other than the airport and car rental but those with TDS should love Vegas which is anti-Trump.

I don't get "not going to the US because Trump is president"? I don't think you're going to run into the man. Other than a little less crime and fewer illegals it's the same place. I despised Obama as a person and president but it sure didn't stop me from traveling around the country.
I’m more concerned his lackeys will read some of the things I’ve said about him online and cast me into some deep dark dungeon.

Or worse, make me have dinner with him.

And a great day was meeting Clifton in WV for lunch…..

It was a pleasure meeting you! I must apologize for the restaurant in Franklin that served food that came either from a box or can. There are good ones in Bridgewater and Harrisonburg, in hindsight Barb and I should have met you there.

So, sorry Clifton I know you are GOP through and through.
Actually I've been a registered democrat since my 20's but today's democrat party is nothing like what it was then so I now mostly support republican candidates. John F Kennedy would be a conservative in the Republican Party today. Current democrat party leaders have ideals that are more aligned with Fidel Castro.

Love the states, been up and down the East coast courtesy of the Grey Funnel Line (RN), then later on, on holiday I had a girlfriend in NY, my boss was great extended long weekends most weekends(4/5 days), flights were cheap and her being a boss did alternate weeks. I did my complex/twin training in San Diego which meant most weekends we'd fly into Vegas park up next to the the biz jets, get treated like royalty even though it was normally a tatty Piper Arrow. Have a few beers a little gamble and crash at a dodgy motel, later on I clocked 80 hours flying up and around the East Coast and inland, always a great reception, normally they had free pilot accommodation to crash at and a free car to get out and about in as long as you filled it up, sometimes it was the latest models sponsored by the fuel companies. Great time meeting folk from outback places to the cities. It's the same as travelling the world on a motorbike, you put out a good vibe you'll get it back in spades.

Never been to the States.
Always wanted to go but for most of my life i could never afford it.

Reading this thread, i think i will give it a miss now i can.

Don’t be put off. Las Vegas is only one city and Nevada only one state, there’s still another 49 states (let alone the sights and sites within them) potentially on the list of ‘Must do’. In a way, simply because it’s so brash and possibly horrible, maybe Las Vegas is somewhere to see for 24 hours?

Whilst I have zero truck with Trump, he alone would not deter me from going. Nor would a negative comment about place XYZ, mean that I’d write off an entire continent.

Having been to Vegas for conferences multiple times, and not being a gambler…… I’d say it’s worth seeing once… aim for three days …shopping, the main strip, fremont/old Vegas…..

As a hub it also offers some stunning road trips …..Zion, Bruce, Grand Canyon, deserts, old towns, route 66, Spanish highway, death valley……all in easy reach…..

We did New England 2 years ago, loved it all, Conecticut was lovely, more old England the people were great too very welcoming. Massatusetts not quite as nice, whale watching in Cape Cod was best $50 weve ever spent.Going back next year to visit different areas.
