Just run in my new BMW R1200gs (water-cooled) and have the original pair of Conti Trail Attack 2s which have only covered 1200miles. Front 120/70 R19 60V rear 170/60 R17 72V
Although the tyres are surprisingly grippy on the road I have decided to fit a set of Michelin PR4s which are supposed to be even better !

Took rims to bike specialist tyre dealer who managed to damage both rims now waiting for repairs to paintwork.
I thought PR4s were only introduced around Feb this year so I was surprised to see the front was actually made last October
(2013) the rear was Feb this year - its worth checking on the age when buying new tyres as they must have a best by date, how old are you prepared to accept a "new "tyre is 8 months too long, I recently bought a Ducato van and the front tyres where over 2years old but nobody wanted to change them !
Looking forward to testing as soon as I get rear wheel back, hope I'm not expecting too much, but as long as I can tell there is a difference I think I should be happy.
I emailed Michelin for some info but as yet no sign of a reply.

I think Michelin will tell you that as long as the tyre was stored inside, away from daylight and in dry conditions, you'll be absolutely fine.

A lot of brand new tyres can be in excess of twelve months old.

Do you want to sell your conti attacks !!!

Don't want to burst Michelin's bubble or anything, but you should be just fine riding out the Contis. They're really good tires, hardly ever a slip in the 8k miles I rode on mine. The only reason I haven't run another set yet is they cost more than the Tourance Next or Anakee 3. The PR4-trail is the most expensive, and not proven to be any better yet.

I've always been sceptical about the semi off road tyres... Always felt a bit harsh, and the gaps at the edges didn't inspire confidence...one has had the Conti's since new. Gave them a good ragging around Oulton Park last week and to be fair to them they never even felt like slipping.. But I'll be putting road tyres on when these are cooked... Why compromise if you don't intend on going away from the Tarmac

It might sound mean, but I'm wondering if you should name the Specialist Tyre Dealer who damaged your rims so that other tossers on this forum can avoid the same damage issues. I'd hate to have to had the two rims damaged on my new bike, and would prefer new replacements not repairs.

What do the collective think, is this reasonable??

A tricky one perhaps?

Happened to me at a main dealer, they pointed it out and replaced the rim at the next service before i could say a word, great service and full credit to them. Mistakes happen and it's how they are resolved that really counts. Very impressed with the integrity and the honesty of the dealer and the

At a later stage in life, I was recently lectured by an infant, (well, in most tossers eyes anyway) that I should purchase my tyres from BMW dealer, as they take good care of the rims, & if they don't & mess up, they rectify, &, sir, (as I was TOLD) is why u MAY but not always pay a little extra.. (From the stealers) thought I would get that last little comment in.. Yay...

Yep that sounds about right, I can understand a guy getting something wrong and messing up one rim, but if he picks up your second rim and drops the same b------ck that's scary!
Hope they comeback as new, and get fitted ok!

Well that would stand true if he spotted his error in time. Tyre monkeys are not known for their intelligence are they?

Mine also came with the Contis, they have done around 5,500 miles, still have some life left but I am about to change them for PR4s. I found the Contis felt fine in the dry, were OK in the wet but their behaviour in the wet at the limit of grip was quite scary as they let go big time without any warning. It may be down to the rider and the Evo 2 may be better but I won't be fitting any more Contis after my experiences with them in the wet.
