Hi Guys

Just in the process of buying a xr 200 for the wife so we can do a few green lanes in the North Yorkshire area.

And a sudden thought has just sprung into my head, she does not have a bike license.

A huge oversite I know but as i've been riding for the last three decades years I never thought about it dooh!

She has a full car license which she has held for twenty plus years, and is not a complete novice when it comes to dirt bikes of road etc.

So the question is, can she ride the 200 with L plates, I understand the test and law has changed since I was told to ride around the block, do an emergency stop and Bob's your uncle you now have a full license.

Cheers in advance, and I now i'm going to get some stick for this one.:blast

To ride a bike on the road you must first do 1 day CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). This allows you to use the "learner" part shown on your car licence. You CANNOT ride on L plates without doing your CBT, and then only up to 125cc, max 15bhp :blast

Then learn and do the 3 part test
1. Theory - highway code and hazared awareness
2 Mod 1 - off road manouvers Only after passing theory. (around cones, emergency stop etc.)
3. Mod 2 - road ride (only if youve passed mod 1)

Good site that will give you info on your local training schools etc. http://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/

Did mine last year ... not cheap :blast

It is worth it in the end :friday

PS
This is all supposed to change at the end of the year, when this process wont allow going straight from L plates to full licence!!, youll go up in stages with 2 years and a test between each!!

cheers guys

wow never realised it was so bloody hard and such a lot involved.

any idea of the cost?

.....any idea of the cost?

Depends on how good you are :blast Most schools will do a DAS (Direct Access Scheme) which can take you from CBT up to full licence in about a week  Some are good, other just out for some cash so do some reserch first with bods that have done the courses. (I used Riverside at Hesketh Bank nr Preston).

I Think there are instructors on this forum that could poss help you out.

Budget  Wouldn't be suppriesd if it totaled out in the £750 to £1000 bracket :eek::eek: with school and exam fees

Just a question. Is this proposed 2 year gap for every learner motorcyclist, or only those younger than 25 years of age?

Sounds as if the UK proposals are following the existing legislation in Germany, but for older than 25 year German drivers, you can do a direct access to full powered bike.
