Two year old GS1200 Adventure, nearside rear indicator appears to have failed.
Strangely is still producing light.....just not a lot of it ! Noticed because of LAMPF! warning message and then double speed flashing of nearside front !

These are LED - so thought if they were going to fail (which I really didnt expect them to !) they'd simply not work at all ?

Any ideas ?

Anyone else had similar issue ?

If you can open up the case, I bet you'll find corrosion from water ingress in there.

If so, you can try cleaning it out with brake cleaner then a squirt of WD40 with some cotton buds, re-seal it and try it again.

If you can't open the case. you can either bin it and buy a replacement, or drill a small hole in wherever it looks like it'll get you access to the innards, then try squirting in as above.

If it's not under warranty, you've got nothing to lose buy trying :nenau

+1 Fanum,

Sounds like a volt drop issue due to water ingress / corrosion, or a bad connection,

OP is correct in that LEDS usually go off, not dim.

Good Luck

Before you butcher the light if you can't get into it, go back to where it plugs into the main loom. Check the connections there and give then a clean and squirt, maybe swap the plugs round between rear right and rear left if that's possible just to make sure the problem is definitely in the lamp housing itself and doesn't move to the opposite side when swapped over.

Hi
just took one apart for you ;D
and this is how it looks like nothing fancy
But the hardest think is opening the indicator
some kind of black silicone is used to glue the upper part like the adhesive for mounting cars windshields but it is possible
to separate I use stanley knife on the other one

Thats for the comments, its out of warranty (Nov 2012) and 26k miles now.

I'll try and trace back to the loom....although suspect its not particularly easy to get to ?

I havent checked but was kinda hoping it would be a simple unplug and replace (if the WD40 approach doesnt work)......or does it have a long wire from the indicator itself and then into the loom ? You'd have thought the former as indicators get knocked off/smashed in accidents all the time so are ripe for replacement ?

Having said that - I've written 2 GSA's off and all the indicators were fine....

I'll get the torch out tonight and take a look........obviously it'll be dark by the time I get home as I can only turn right........

Out of warranty?

2 years and unlimited mileage for the 1st owner.

Disconnect the connector under the back seat (to get there take the number plate holder off )and connect to 12v source <car battery charger> or like my 10.39v
blue wire -positive
brown -negative

That will tell you if the LED indicator is working !
If not! you just found the problem
and you need new one or 2nd hand
hope this helps

New one is £30.71 from Motorworks or £18 used. On Ebay £75 for a set of 4.

As the man said above. Look at the connector where it splits to left and right or test with power supply. The LED's is surface mounted so it would be the LED gone duff or a dry joint on the PCB.

One of the 1200's on Sgt Bilco's 2012 Alaska trip had that problem. Also the NSR unit. Thast bike was still under warranty.

The seat, rack etc were removed, connectors swapped left to right to confirm LED unit failure. Santa Rosa BMW had a unit in stock which seemed telling in itself.

This site never fails to amaze me - I sell all my old gear on on here, whether its bike stuff or not, I buy stuff from on here because it feels more like buying from like-minded people (in general !) and if you've got a problem you can almost guarantee you wont be the first one !
Cheers guys.

Thursday morning pencilled in for investigation and then check out Tanneman's suggestions on replacement if necessary.

Cheers.
