DOH!

Was out for a ride Thursday and for some reason, the carbon can almost had a hole burned through it. It has a soft spot about 40mm round you can push with a finger, its pretty spongy, like the resin has burned off completely.

Just a heads up for anyone considering one. Ive had it for 11000 miles without issue, but its only 9 months old and has 2 years warranty so making a claim for a replacement. Might go for the Aluminium one if its available. Shame, as i love the look of this one.

Nope no panniers. Could have been the crap and mud ? but you'd think it would get hotter on the other end, on the inside face.

It can happen with twins and singles due to the exhaust pulses, I'm told............

Speak to anyone who makes bike exhausts for a living and they will tell you (if they are being honest) that carbon fibre cans have a finite lifespan, even with heat resistant wrapping around the inside of the carbon fibre outer they will eventually delaminate. they reckon on 4 to 5 years.

When I had a can made recently for my CCM the company pointed out that things as simple as fording through cold water with a hot exhaust can cause problems.

I wonder if you have been unlucky and the outer sleeve is from a faulty batch for it to last so short a time

Ah thats interesting. Yes thinking about it, carbon is a pretty odd material to make an exhaust from. Its covered under warranty, but i have asked if it can be exchanged for an ally one.

Do they do a black aluminium or titanium one?

And, clean that bloody bike!:rob:P

looks like its been on a bloody bonfire!!

Just won a stainless one on eBay, so if i get a replacement one under warranty, i'll chop it down for some sunday braaaaap action.

Warranty claims with the Italians are slow at best and this Stainless silencer came up in eBay cheap, so i got it. Slotted straight on. The sound difference is amazing, it sounds deeper, more aggressive and no hint of rasp. i love it !!! Never buying Carbon again !!!! If i do get a warranty one, i'll pull it apart and ceramic coat the silencer so i can put a black one on. Then might keep this as spare or cut it down for hooligan sundays...

I cut the old exhaust open on the weekend. It had blown 80% of the baffle material out and was just hallow. No wonder the new can sounds so much better. ITs a pretty crappy result, and must be the reason the carbon melted. When it got covered in mud, it just cooked it. Took the opportunity to make an ASBO can out of it... :D
