Lifetime maps installer

I've been trying for the last hour to activate my lifetime maps, I get as far as entering the activation code, I have my 660 connected via the usb lead then all I get is

Gathering information (this may take several seconds) ...

and thats as far as I get.

Any ideas anyone ?

is it me or are Garmin operating system poorly written.
