one of the things that impresses most with the s10 is the brakes, the power on a heavy bike is impressive

I see the BMW S1000xr has them the same (front works back), is this new for BMW or do they have others in the range with similar?

also noted that some larger Hondas have a reverse system (back works front) - don't understand this at all - why?

maybe with all the electronics now linked brakes will become as common as ABS? be keen to hear what riders think both from a comfort and safety POV

I liked the braking set-up on the Super Tenere. My MT09 Tracer shares a lot of technology from the S10 - instrument panel is identical, ABS & TCS and fly by wire throttle but not the linked brakes. I've got use to using the rear brake again but it would be nice to get that bit of rear when using the front to add some stability without having to consciously move my foot. Maybe that will be one of the changes in the mk2 Tracer, together with the cruise control I would like.

I think Yamaha got it right with the S10, I would never want back operating rear, but on the S10 the setup just seems to work really well, Two-up I would still use the back brake a bit around town to reduce dive, but solo I never touch the rear lever unless of a gravel or dirt track. Not forgetting these big twins also have a huge amount of engine braking as well.

Also first recent bike I have not bent the discs on during the first two-up Alpine trip, bent two sets of ZZR1400 discs in under 10k and the set on my GS gave up on its trip to the Alps (with about 12k on the clock) my S10 is approaching 20k on the first set of discs - and the pads look to have a good bit of life left as well, just hope this does not Jinx my upcoming trip.

Becoming more common?

Guzzi were doing it in the late 70's and most big bikes seem to have them now.

Obviously KTM do the best current system with the lean sensitive ABS :)

I don't intend to find out if it works
Although it is a bit tempting to go in too hard on purpose knowing sped can be scrubbed off mid corner but that won't be the fastest way round the bend regardless

To be honest I was cynical about linked brakes until I got the S10 and must say I love them, brilliant brakes, only managed to get the ABS to kick in over a bump whilst mucking about in the yard, never on the road.
Just keep an eye on the rear pads, I had a 12,000 mile service at Alf England last week and they said the rear pads probably won`t make the next service.

I like ABS as a safety net in theory, but so often people go on about how this, that or the other saved them....

...but I had over 25 years with no ABS or traction control and never crashed due to locking up or spinning up so in all those years it would not have saved me once....

...but would I have maybe been more gung-ho if i thought the bike could save me?

Cornering ABS sounds awesome, but maybe also tempts people to try and brake when perhaps the best thing to do would be roll on a little....

this has probably saved me a couple of times - Don't Panic, look where you want to go, get back on the gas.
