I like planning tours with lakes on the itinerary.

I'm after any recommendations for places that have some life going on the water (sailing/windsurfing etc) as well as some life on shore.

Riva del Garda fits the bill and I'm looking for somewhere similar anywhere else in the Alps.

:thumby:

They are all over the place!

Use Google maps and look for the blue bits :thumb2

Most of the lakes with a fair sized town or a city alongside will almost certainly have what you're looking for, but beware they also tend to be the most expensive places to stay and attract a lot of traffic.

OK - I know what a lake is :rob and even some can glisten :)

I'm after some recommendations/experience for something similar to Riva.

Looking at alternatives, Como, and other Italian Lakes, don't seem to have an equivalent. Swiss lakes are sleepy. Constance is congested.

I know this view is superficial, hence the post.

Can't be arsed to look at Wapping's links but I was at Lake Annecy with him last year and the southern end, near Doussard looked to be busy as far as water sports are concerned. Quiet as far as night life is concerned but there is more going on in Annecy itself. Personally, I preferred the relative placidity of Doussard.

On Lake Garda, Malcesine is a good alternative to Riva.

Lake Bled in Slovenia can get lively if you time your visit with one of the motorcycle rallies. Although the best water sports in Slovenia are on the River Soca and tributaries.

I'm biased but Lake Annecy is simply beautiful, great place to kick back, hire a bike, cycle round the lake, swim (pool or lake) and enjoy the Town, particularly it's market. Really good.

Garda, Como et al are, by contrast, "touristy".

Consider also Excenevex (just about in France but on Lake Geneva) and nearby Yvoire ~ very nice and you can swim in the finest Evian we drink in the UK!

Hopefully this picture from last summer at Excenevex will upload....

The lake at Silvaplana (near St Moritz) had loads of folks wind and kite surfing on Monday. Looked good to me.

Wonderful place, driven past a few times, probably very pricey though.
