A company in Cork are providing a post code type system for Ireland, both North and South.

Garmin are supporting it as are other businesses. I sent them an e-mail and they hope to have a software update for the Zumo 550 next month.

How long will it take our useless Government to adopt it?

Given that this has been 'announced' by the folks behind the Loc8 scheme a few weeks ago, and our great Department (Transport ?) have not jumped in there to share in the glory, I think it can be safely said that the scheme they have been working on for a few years now - and due to be launched "shortly" - will NOT be the same as this one.

So having done without them up to now it looks as if we will soon have a number of options for postcodes..........:blast

We'll have to wait and see.

I'm surprised they haven't already because it would be a perfect reflection:
Take a perfectly good location format and convert it into something that can only be used by the dominant company's device ( and only the newer ones at that! ). Or in other words try and sell us something that we don't need.

The postcode "problem" is a load of nonsense in any case. Whatever the government comes up with will be a waste of time and money.

It looks like a good system. All it really does is makes the grid lat/long into a nice format with the resolution of 10m x 10m (you try telling a taxi driver your lat'long when locked)
I like that it can give Locality and zone too.

I'd guess that as soon as it's mentioned some union sh1tehawk is going to demand that all the workers (An Post for example) will need a full paid 2 weeks off for retraining, extra pay for their new skills & change of work practices with threats of strikes in between while the workers it actually effects wouldn't care either way.

So how long?? Verrrrry long.
