Local Knowledge?

We will be heading to Holyhead for the ferry to Ireland on 20th Aug from the East Midlands. Last time we went, we used the A5 for the whole journey, but it was quite slow in places. As locals to the area, would you recommend the alternative of A49 / A55 as a better route, or are there too many scameras along these roads?

Hiya Red,
I took the A5 on the friday down to the Hog Roast and made good time, saw very little police presence. I have been told since that it's not to bad Monday- Friday.
Different story on the way back as place was crawling on the Sunday

I was in Anglesey last weekend. I didn't want to use the A5, the missus hates riding on motorways so we took the scenic route up to Stoke-on-Trent and followed the A525 through Whitchurch, Wrexham, Ruthin, Denbigh, St Asaph to the A55.

Some good roads (especially between Wrexham and Ruthin) and no problems (yet) with cameras.

There was little traffic on the Friday evening.

Hi Red,
I live round Chester so use the A55 a lot, takes about 90 min from here to Holyhead, booring road, no scenery, no bends but it is quite quick. No static speed cameras up to Anglesey, not sure after that, hav'nt been up there for a few months and they grow like mushrooms in North Wales. They do use some mobile ones which sit on the bridges now and then but you can usually see them before they see you. ( blue vans with yellow stripes). Traffic gets heavier when ther's a ferry due out, lorries and caravans so I guess its the same for the A5.
A5 - nicer road
A55 - a little quicker
Dublin and beyonde - biking heaven

Red, I know Mid and North Wales like the back of my hand. The A55, A5 routes will be chocked in August so speed camera would'nt be too much of an issue.

If I were you, coming from the east Midlands, head west to mid Wales and take your choice of roads to head up north.
Perhaps aiming to pick up the A5 at Betws Y Coed. There are no 'best' routes, they're all good.

PS the stone walls of north Wales are littered with bunches of flowers from dead bikers loved ones, take care. Assume every car driver is looking at the scenery. Enjoy.
