Where have you been that's unchained?

There are a few locations I need help in getting details for in the EA area, plus I'm sure you'll be able to add hundreds more.

Mine are a hotel and thai/malay restaurant in Yoxford-name address-gps ref
the hut on the hill outside Cromer on the car park-is it unchained or a council service and name address etc

The gatehouse lodge, hotel/b&b that's part of a huge estate, I'll know it if you tell me

The winkle hut at Blackeney Point
The smokehouse between Cromer and Blackney that's in a small village on an s-bend
The smokehouse at Orford
The pub down the side of the river opposite Walberswick by all the boat moorings (Is it 'unchained' or part of a brewing cionglomerate?)
I enjoyed all of these places for one reason or another and would like to include them in www.unchainedworld.com.
Here's what Unchained is about and how you can help.

As a Brit ex-pat in the US, I took a 10k mile ride last summer to discover my new home's offerings. The ride had 22 miles of interstate only (unavoidable) and I only stayed and ate at unique one-offs, no chain restaurants or motel.

I was asked if I could put something together for others and I'm nearly there.

What I'm looking at is a reference site for unique eateries and services, where you can post comments, location (gps ref) and where others can then input a route and see where the nearest unchained services are. It needn't be a full package, a great bacon buttie or cup of tea, is enough. A clean toilet at a campsite, or a happy waiter will do.

Below is the text from the under construction page. I'd love to have your input now, so that when we launch, there will be useful info from the get go.

There are many exciting plans for Unchained and I'd be delighted if you'd come along for the ride.

I'll see if we can link to this site too, but would guess we need some traffic first.

Welcome to Unchained

The simple goal of this site is to banish bland.

Here you can share the splendidly diverse experiences of fellow travelers who have commended services that have excelled.
You can add your own recommendations, be it a particularly pleasant pie, a ‘fluffsom’ bath-towel, a vista that cries ‘gaze in awe’, or a simple, but heartfelt, smile.

To achieve this, Unchained is designed to promote the individualistic, to champion the creative, to share the obscure and highlight those establishments that offer exceptional value.
The only criteria?
They must be one-offs and not part of corporate chains.

To establish the credibility of Unchained, only referrals made by you, the travellers, seekers and discoverers of outstanding service will be included. All that’s required is, you share your discoveries with others.

Record details of the provider, their location (GPS ref if available) and share your comments in Unchained and you will be able to see where others recommend too. Input your trip and see a locator of Unchained services that are near your planned route, plus what fellow travelers have discovered there.

Try an unchained venue or service for yourself, then, add your comments.

If you value diversity, then you too, will want to banish bland and become Unchained.

While this site is under construction, you can post your Unchained recommendations to:

Thank you.

Got to ask

Hi Steve,

I really like the idea, but I think we all should know up front. How are you funding the site? Will there be advertising and if so how will it be chosen. The net is full of useful information put there for very bad reasons (take your money, sell you something you don't need etc.). Just like to check.

In the mean time does Essex count? Don't forget the tea hut near High Beech in Epping forest.

Seattle is Microsoft city, and there's an active GS group, so I've got volunteers, free server space, free graphics, I'm doing the marketing via groups like this, programming bike enthusiasts are doing the html stuff and we are all putting in our time foc.
At a time when we have sufficient traffic, we have links to a GPS company and may be able to add it as a service via their systems too, but the site will be funded by us. This is why we need your input with unchained locations. The database has been designed to enable a semi automated operation, with only a moderator required to keep the scandalous and chained out.
We will look at getting regional riders to visit unchained recommendations, to validate that they are indeed unchained.
Advertising...unless it is an unchained service provider, then no, however tempting it might be.
There are money generating ideas that we have, Unchained Tours, Unchained T-Shirts, books and maps, plus GPS downloads, but for a register of Unchained businesses it will be free.

Essex does count and I've been to the High Beech tea hut, so it's going to be included.

Cabin

The Cabin Tea Rooms at Burnham on Crouch :clap

Is that the one on the right as you ride in, next to the sea wall and the monument?

Anything in particular that's good about it, apart from all those bends on the way, with bits of fairing and footpegs in the gutter?

The Thai place in Yoxford is the Satis House - Top Notch

Also try The Bell in Saxmundham for superb food and great beer.

The Lighthouse in Aldeburgh is very, very good.

The Farm Cafe in Marlesford on the A12 does fantastic breakfasts but thy ain't cheap.

It's nice round here.

Yes that is the one. Classic biker cafe with excellent value full octane breakfasts. It is also licenced to sell alcohol if you (or your pillion) feel the urge.

Would you guys in EA claim the Ram Jam on A1? I can't quite place exactly where it is, can you help?

A1 traveller

It's actually in Rutland, so I'd let the Midlands have it.

The Great North Road
STRETTON
Rutland
LE15 7QX

I don't think the Midland's know Rutland is there though, so I'll need a recommendation from an A1 user. Okay I know the A1 isn't a GS's natural environment, but as a means to an end someone might have used it while driving Up t' north in't car t' buy pigeons 'n' wippets.

Seals and beams

Blakeney Point, that's where I've been trying to think of. If I recollect there are some nice eateries there to catch the seal watchers. Then there's Walberswick too. Anything in that Suffolk chocolate box lid place, all beams and the Swan Hotel. I should remember it, it's where I got married the first time, then again I've spent years trying to forget it. Begins with an L I think.

If any of you get over here, I found Frank's Place. It specialises in SPAM, spam burgers, slt, spam breakfasts, side orders of spam, all a bit monty python, except there were no vikings.

Frank's Place
We Cook Spam
Oak Harbour
Whidby Island
Washington...spamtastic.

Woodbridge, Suffolk

The Whistlestop Cafe and Station Hotel (all one business and definately unchained) - right on the .......

railway station!

I've been there. It's near that smokery too, so bonus and if you go to the anglo saxon burial ground,(What's that called, it's on the tip of my typing finger) you can add culture to the mix.

Sutton Hoo - is it chained as it's run by National Trust (or similar)? Cracking place and well worth a visit :thumb2

sutton hoo

I think Sutton Hoo counts as, 'chainmailed', little historic armoury whimsy there.

Now, I'd say it was chained, but as an addition to a recommendation of an unchained cafe in Woodbridge ...and nearby is Sutton Hoo where the burial grounds were found to contain one of the best preserved examples of a saxon king's treasurey etc...it would be fine. In fact, I'd encourage that sort of detail.

www.unchainedworld.com is all about the details that make a place/service stand out for you and proximity to places of interest certainly qualifies.

Blakeney Point

One of my fav rides from Colchester was up the A12 to Lowestoft then meandering to Blakeney.

Are there any unchaineds along that route?

Plus, around Cambridgeshire, what have you got there? Ely? The Norfolk Broads area might have some, but are they worth recommends?

Finally, I've set up a seperate section for unchaineds undiscovered. These are unchaineds without a recommendation yet, so, a challenge is there. Convert the most undiscovereds and there will be a prize.

I'll also have a downloadable sign that you can give your unchained recommendation to put up.

Still need more recommendations though.

Cheers,

Lamble.
