HAVING POSTED ABOUT PANNIERS A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, I HAVE BITTEN THE BULLET AND BOUGHT SOME BMW EXPANDABLE ONES. I HAVE READ SOMEWHERE THAT YOU CAN GET THE LOCKS ALTERED TO EXEPT THE IGNITION KEY OR ORDER THE LOCK KEYS TO BE THE SAME AS THE IGNITION. WHEN I ORDERED MY CASES I WAS TOLD THAT CODED LOCKS WERE AN OPTIONAL EXTRA AND COST OVER 40 QUID, WHICH I COULDNT JUSTIFY FOR THE FEW TIMES THAT I WOULD USE THE PANNIERS A YEAR. IF ONE OF YOU GOOD OLD BOYS CAN OFFER ADVICE OR PICTURES IT WOULD HELPFULL. :mcgun

Why are you shouting... (hehe :) )

Have just purchased a set myself and like you couldn't justify the extra cost of having the coded locks. Only use them for long trips etc so having an extra key is no problem really.

Their pretty good and look part of the bike - in expanded mode I think they are wider than the bars so be careful when filtering etc I aso believe that their waterproof (I haven't tested that yet... only what's been said on here)

HTH :)

I seem to remember that my locks were 'built' to match the ignition key as part of the cost of the system.

AND GET THAT STICKY CAPS KEY FIXED

The locks for the 1200 panniers are not exactly the same as the pics in the link TunedIn posted, but very similar. That page should tell you everything you need to know to change the locks yourself.

You'll (probably) need some different "wafers" (or levers or whatever you want to call them) - I took the dismantled locks along to my dealer, and they just dug round in their bag of bits and gave me the required parts for free.

Locks can be matched to your key at any BMW dealer by a Mechanic that knows what he is doing. It takes 10 minutes and they shouldnt charge you anything at least I was not when same was done on mine.

1200GS BMW System Panniers are not waterproof. With the Top box being the least waterproof.
Tested in Austria/Switzerland floods a couple of weeks ago.

1/2 cm of water in top box
About a 5 teaspoons of water in both panniers.

Glad i got the Mane event inner bags as a result of a posting on this site.

Locks

I have read you replys and I am imprest with how helpfull you lot are, but it looks a bit tricky. Have any of you actually done it as i have no mechanical experience. :thumb

Although I ordered my panniers and top box with the bike, due to supply problems, they arrived weeks later. The locks were still matched to the ignition key and if I remember correctly it's a simple task to change the lock barrels on the cases.
I found my cases to be perfectly water tight during prolonged riding in heavy rain.

hi monster

the locks on the r1200gs can be re-coded to suit your ignition key and your local dealer should be able to do this free of charge

The lock barrels have 4 diferent tumblers A,B,C&D or was it 1,2,3&4
the dodge is to remove the lock barrels and juggle the tumblers untill the all operate with the ign. key then replace the lock. I seem to remember that the lowest tumbler holds the barrel in, its just a fiddle, but dont be tempted to do it without good light and where you cant loose any bits that you drop !!!!!!!
Mike.
P.S. Good luck.

If you sell the bike and want to keep the panniers then it is better to have separate keys because you will have to give the ignition keys to the new owner.

Nah ... just keep the original key to the panniers ... then change the locks back to how they were in the first place ...

Hi,
I bought my OE side panniers from another GS owner, and brought them with me to Germany where I bought my bike. It was no problem changing the locks to match my ignition key, just had to give the dealer the VIN number from the original owner's bike, and they changed it for free.

I have driven non-stop for 5 months and they are waterproof for me (except one side where I've dropped the bike and off-kiltered the case when expanded). If that happens to you, take the case to a dealer and they can disassemble it and re-align the ratchets, at a cost though.

I think they look the nicest, are very easy to take on and off, and the expandability is handy.
