About 6 of us on bikes are heading up as usual for the NorthWest 200 on the 13/14 May.
We would like to stay in or near the City as we are keen to look around instead of just passing through.
Can anyone here recommend accommodation that preferably meets with the following exacting criteria -
With or near a good bar and preferably some music.
Secure bike parking
Around 80 quid B&B

I could just ask the tourist office but feel this site might better understand our needs.

Slick Nick.

Nick, not clear from your original post but

- how many nights do you wanna stay
- what's your budget for twin room with breakfast for a night

Do you want to be:

- bang smack in the city centre or
- within walking distance, say 1 mile or so, or
- a short drive, say a few miles

PS call the place whatever you like, either Londonderry or Derry but not this 'Derry - Londonderry' shit :-)

Slick Nick.
We stayed with Patricia Mc Mahon (Castle Gregory) at http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/cas...5197d1f8d74141e662c3acbX13;type=total;ucfs=1&
Very inexpensive and absolutely superb.
In the city, but 2.5km from best music and pubs. Take a taxi.
Could not recommend highly enough.

All of the city centre hotels are excellent and only a short stagger from the bar to the bed. DERRY..

Thanks for the replies so far and in reply to mgpaulie.....

We want to stay two nights, the 13&14th May inclusive.
Our budget is up to 80 quid a night per head, single or twin occupancy.
We are flexible on where about in the City to stay as we don't know the place and are looking for a recommendation.

Thanks,
Slick Nick.

The City centre hotels are:

The City Hotel: good hotel located alongside the river, lively bar, underground parking below the hotel. < 5min walk to good restaurants and bars
The Maldron Hotel: good hotel, bar can be quiet, underground parking below the hotel. Very central. Located alongside the city walls. < 10min walk to good restaurants and bars
Travelodge, located beside the city hotel. Parking is in a shared multi story behind the hotel.

Just out a bit is Da Vinci's Hotel: good hotel located alongside the river, lively bar, parking in hotel car park behind the hotel. You could ask for a room that overlooks the car park. It is a 25 min nice walk along the embankment to good restaurants and bars, city centre etc. or £3.50 in a taxi.

A bit further out is The Waterfoot Hotel & a Premier Inn. Both decent hotels with good bars but you will need to taxi everywhere.

B&Bs tend to be on the outskirts of the city. As mentioned above Castle Gregory is very good. I know Patricia quite well and she does run a quality establishment.

Taxis in Derry are cheap. You will get almost anywhere for less than £5 cityside or < £7 if you stay across the river.
We don't have a major problem with car or bike theft like other cities do but that's not to say there wouldn't be 'opportunists'

£80 per head per night is a healthy budget for a twin room with breakfast and should also cover a single room

Derry doesn't have a large no. of hotel rooms so book early.
My choice would be the City Hotel. Park the bikes up, walk about a bit and have a beer. There's a guided walking tour of the city walls that leaves each hour on the hour. £4 I think and worth doing

If you do get time and weather permits, the Inis Eoghain 100 is a nice bike run around the coast of Donegal. Takes about 3 hours with a stop included.

I stayed in the City Hotel for a few weeks a couple of years ago & had a great stay.
When I go back with the bike I will certainly be staying there again.

Call it what you like it's your trip :)

Lovely part of the world

Enjoy !
