Following on from this thread, I stripped down the back end of my bike today to check out the damage. Here's what I found.

(Sorry for crap quality images, I'm away from my PC and don't have access to photoshop).

Properly destroyed clutch:

From the gearbox side. The input shaft still has some splines left on it but the shaft itself wobbles about on knackered bearings inside the gearbox.

All the bits:

Here's the collected mess that came out, complete with large shards of clutch and some battered ball bearings that must've come from the gearbox.

There is scarring all around the inside of the clutch cavity and even the teeth of the starter motor and inside of the starter motor casing show damage. At first I was sure that the slave cylinder had failed and started the chain of events that led to this - but actually the cylinder doesn't seem broken to my untrained eye - I'm beginning to wonder if actually the big gearbox bearing gave up first, taking the clutch with it :nenau

Ho hum.

Couple of questions:

Should I go for a recon gearbox and junk this one, or is it worth getting it rebuilt? (That job is way beyond me).

Assuming I get a/the gearbox sorted, and I'm happy enough about replacing the clutch myself, should I worry about anything else that might have happened? It's just that the failure seems so destructive - I wonder if there are any other horrors I should look out for that aren't immediately obvious.

Cheers,

Pluck

never seen the clutch plate arms snapped like that before, or the bearing debris.
