Has anyone done this? Is it expensive? Shipping company contacts?
Any advice very much appreciated. We are heading out there for a year and want to take the bike but are worried it maybe prohibitively pricey.

I've researched this for myself and I'm leaning towards sending the bike with Wallenius Wilhelmsen. A Dutch container shipping line who collect at Southampton and will get the bike to Halifax NS in about 8 days. Approx £500 each way.
See Here
I believe Paul Narramore (apologies if it isn't) is taking his bike over to the States for a second trip. Do a search on here about his trip. I think he left this week for his 2nd one so may not be accessible for a while.

Or you can send by air with Motorcycle Express which is anywhere between £1500-1700 round trip. Quicker means of getting the bike there. Some have flown on the same flight their bike is on but it is a lot more expensive.
Try Here
As has been said, there is a lot of info on the Horizons Unlimited website and you can speak to many more people whohave personalexperience of the good, bad or indifferent shipping companies.

Good luck with the search and trip. Let me know how you get on.

Cheers
