My 1150 leans over a very long way when on the side stand. Indeed, 'cos I have a weak ankle I find it all but impossible to get on the bike and then push it upright.

Having a closer look it seems as though the pivot pint has oodles of play in it. The stand itself doesn't appear to have any bend in it.

Is this a simple thing to repair? A simple tighten-up-bolt sort of thing? Some kind of bush?

Or is it likely to cost the earth?

i shimmed my airhead sidestand to reduce the play, but TBH it didn't make much difference.

i also fitted a GSA stand to my 1150GS, but that didn't make enough difference. you could bolt a large lump of plastic or alloy onto the bottom plate, but it just looks like the poor thing's got a club foot to me.
if i had to do it again, i'd extend a standard stand so it looked stock, but longer.

1200's have a side stand the right length BTW

Mines the same.Lot of movement at the end of the stand.
I fitted a longer Adventure side stand to mine which helps.
There is a pivot pin and bush in the side stand which i didn't replace,so it might be worth changing those.
May just be a sloppy fit from new.:nenau

A stand extender would solve your problem try this one from Nippy Normans.

I find if I sit on the bike, turn the bars all the way to the left and pull a bit while pushing down on the right footpeg it comes up a bit easier :thumb2

Ah yes.

I already have one of these to make the situation tolerable. Even so, I have to be wary of any slope on the ground.

Perhaps I need to grow longer legs - although I'm already 6' tall with 32" inside leg, so I can get both feet flat on the deck when stopped.

It's the weakness in my ankle following an accident where it's been screwed and plated that causes problems. I have already worked out that I need to lean to the right to try to induce some movement (of the bike).

And the one thing I don't like doing is to rock the bike off the sidestand and then to mount it. Where feasible I try to bung the bike on its mainstand.

Dick,

if these is some play in the stand how about drilling it out to the next bolt size up or getting a local engineering company to make a bush?

Ok… so first apologies for resurrecting such an old post… but I am struggling to work out what to do for the best here. Since re shocking my 1150 GSA with Wilbur’s the slack free play in the side stand is much more noticeable – about an inch when on the centre stand (in and out movement). I am going to fit a puck riser which should give me between 3/4 to 1 inch increase in height and looking and the bush / bolt / pin workshop drawing – has anyone else resleeved the stand (replace 2, 3 11 and 12) with a new bush and bolt? Or any other tips and words of wisdom before she falls over…

Hi,

Had the same issue with my 1150, (03).
Even at the filling station it was a struggle to get it upright when fully loaded, I ordered an ice Hickey puck off eBay for around £3 and bolted this to the bottom of the stand,
Works great with the bike more upright.

Check the stand mounting plate (number 4 in your diagram). They sometimes split where the side stand lug locates, which causes the stand to lean over. .

I snapped my GSA stand changing someones tyre - A GSA one was about £2M and as rare as hens teeth so I got a normal GS one 2nd hand, cut the foot off about an inch above, cut the broken stand foot say maybe 2.5 inches above the foot, then got a 3in 15mm steel bar and just just push fitted the bits together. Hardly leans at at now;) You have to be careful not to make it too long else it fouls the centre stand though. I can measure the dimensions if you 're interested. Mine worked more by luck than judgement...as usual

The difference in length between a standard GS side stand and the "longer" ADV side stand is less than half an inch :D

My side stand is also sloppy, but I think its normal, it's always been that way. However, the lean seems excessive and I'm thinking about welding a 5mm plate to the foot.
I also want to make it a lot bigger to stop it sinking into soft ground.
Q :- Is 5MM plate going to make much difference, and are there any good reasons not to do this?

A cheap way of making the foot bigger is by screwing an ice hockey puck to it. :thumb2

Ice hockey puck., used to be lots of used pucks available on eBay .. apparently they have a shelf life if used in ice hockey.
Perfect size, and rubber so good grip when used on side stand
Drill two small hole in side stand foot, then screw two self tapping screws into the puck, had mine in place for 25 years :D

I want to weld it on then powdercoat the stand......I'd really like to know how thick to make it, maybe 10mm might make a noticeable difference. But it feels dodgy the way it is when fully loaded.

Be careful if you add length to the sidestand , too long and it will hit the centre stand before it fully retracts , it is close if you put a GSA sidestand on an otherwise standard GS but I have done it on a couple of bikes .

Just remembered how ridiculous the angle of lean is on a GS on the sidestand even with new pivot bolt and bush, on my old GS I used the Adventure stand and back then they were buttons off E Bay.

Decided to modify an old GS stand I had in the shed, the new extension is solid bar and turned on the lathe a stepped section fits snugly inside the old stand and I will weld it and the cut and chamfer it for the best height and angle of lean.

The blue line on the extension is standard GS length to the sidestand foot , the purple is GSA
