Started the bike this morning (2001 1150gs) and there was a considerable mettalic rattle from the engine, thought it was the cam chain tensioner so turned off, restarted and noise reduced so thought with the bike being stood a few days the oil may have taken its time to get to the tensioner, 100 yards down the road and all appeared OK. Listening to it again at tick over the noise stops when you hold the LHS throttle body actuating cam, there is some reduction on the RHS but left is noisier. When you feel the actuator it feels like there is something knocking. Presumably these can wear so is it the throttle body needing replacement or somthing else? Anybody had this before?

Seems strange that it became noticeable so suddenly, but the description sounds the same as the TB's on mine. They have been overhauled by Scriminger's and all is quiet.

Pretty common to have wear in the LH throttle body shaft with the rattle that comes with it.
Options to repair include as per steadysteve above or do it yourself with a kit from DanCata (a search will reveal all).
There is also a thing called tickler killer which replaced the metal cap on the side of the body with a brass one that incorporates a screw and locknut to put pressure on the shaft and stop it flapping about. They work, but are not really a cure.
Your last option is to buy a recondition throttle body that has had the shaft and seals replaced. Just so happens I have a spare one ;)

Is there a price for the spare one? :thumb

I am having a look round tonight so will let you all know what I find.

I would want £45 for it. It has had the new spindle, bushes and seals. I have secured the throttle plate with aero-nuts as opposed to peening over the throttle plate screw ends. I feel this is a much better solution. Exceptionally clean and ready to fit (tested and rattle free on my 1150gs).

I think Dans kits are about $60 and its not a difficult job to do, so that may be a slightly cheaper option.
Heres a guide to fitting a kit: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=630335
If you go for a used one make sure it is for the 1150 (they use a 5 degree throttle plate), the brass screw turns freely and it comes of a low milage bike.
