Can anyone tell me if you can lower a 650 Dakar I know you can a GS its just the wife likes the more expensibe Dakar
Yep
You can either replace the rear shock with a standerd GS unit, fit a factory lowered rear shock (it's shorter than the standard) Or you can fit Kouba lowering links
www.koubalink.com dog bones that drop the rear by either 1 or 2 inches.
Also fit a standard GS seat as the daker seat is usualy the high seat (there is no low seat)
By lowering the rear you will affect the steering geomitry. As the forks are the same on both bikes (it seems to be the 21inch front wheel is the sole reason the front of the bike stands higher 'about 1.5 inches at the bars') you have two choises, put a 19" front wheel on or slide the yokes down the stantions about 30mm. There is an internal mod you can do to lower the forks, but I'd need to draw it to explain it properly.
I had my head under a GS and a Dakar side by side looking at the differences last monday. Thinking of the posibilities of converting a GS to a Dakar. I haven't got a GS to convert yet, otherwise I'd have suggested a parts swop.
If you want to save yourself a whole load of time in the garage, you could fit a new compleat set of Dakar body panels to a standerd GS for about £360.00
I bet thats the reason your lady want's a Dakar. She likes the colour sceam
