Before I rush to buy a fancy lowered seat, it has been suggested that I try putting the existing BMW seat in the lower of its two positions.

Right, I thought. Rushed the BMW manual and read it. Does it help? Not much.

I can see the two sets of 'locators' under the seat and also the appropriate bits on the bike frame that they sit in. However, I cannot for the life of me work out how to make the upper set of fixing work. These are, I assume, the ones I need to get the saddle lower.

I imagine that there is probably some secret trick to this - a bit like the Masonic handshake.

Can anyone pass on the secret to me please?

Lower seat

Droppy:
It took me while but I got the knack for it:

Lean the seat in position, then locate the back first into the lower position by pushing the seat back against the aluminium plate (back seat base) Once the back of the seat is in the lower position, push forward and the seat should lock in the lower front position by himself.

Sounds worst that bactually is. Try a few times and you'll conquer the bugger...
