Luggage choice

I am heading off for a week's adventure in a couple of weeks, and need to work out what luggage to use on the R1200GS. I am hoping that there is plenty of experience here so people can tell me any problemms, pleasant experiences, with each choice.

I already have a BMW topbox, but do not want to have all the weight back there, and that high, so am thinking about options to add to it.

One choice (assuming they are in stock) is just to buy the panniers from BMW. However, they are quite a lot of money, and I do not fancy trying to lug three big bxes into the hotel each night. I suppose that I could buy inner bags, but, again, that adds to the cost. So, maybe there are some cheap bags that fit just right, such as ski-boot bags, or something?

Second option is a tail-bag, like they tested in Ride this month. Something that properly attaches to the passenger seat, tends to be pretty square-ish in construction, has pockets and so on, and is a decent size (similar capacity to the top box). The advantage of this is that it will be very well fastened down, and it is only about £90 for a good one.

Third option is something like Oxford sports panniers. Soft panniers, that I can throw over my shoulder and carry when I get off. About £100, and carry the weight nice and low.

Final choice is a duffel-bag. Probably a drybag, most likely from Ortlieb. It will bungie very well behind me, and in front of the top box, and will fit a decent amount of kit, and be easy to carry when I park up. They are also completely waterproof, and come in a nice yellow to match the bike.

I assume most people here have just shelled out the full amount for the proper pannier set, but can anyone offer any thoughts for me?

I am not planning to tour 2-up (half the reason for going is just to have me, on my own, far from the crowds), and I am not going to be doing 20,000 miles around the world. This trip is me, going to maybe Corsica, the alps, or the pyrennes, for a week or so, staying in hotels. Paying £500 for the BMW kit, and never again using it, seems a bit excessive.

Thanks.

somebody local might hire out the stuff you need for a one off trip?? :nenau
try in the wanted section?

I'm planning to sell my GS1200 panniers plus inner bags. Used once, they are like new and completely unmarked. Let me know if you are interested.

Yes, I am interested.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Edited to say that clearly, you are in London. Oops.

Given your description, are you in the city?

I used an Ortlieb drybag strapped to the back seat, handy as a backrest :D , and a pair of Oxford 1st time throwovers (£40) for my jolly up in Scotland & they were great :thumb
If I was going farther I`d probably look at getting a 2nd hand set of BM panniers, using them & then sell them on for not a great loss :thumb

Kingston-upon-Thames or Mayfair, call 020 8942 8538 if you'd like to discuss.

I will just do a little bit of research first, but may well give you a call tomorrow, if that is OK?

I need to think whether I want the panniers at all, or whether to go for the old-fashioned bungied bag on the seat.

That route still apppeals a bit, as it would be like when I used to ride up and down the country on an RXS100.

On the othet hand, I have felt the lack of panniers at waitrose more than once...

No problems. Home after 7pm or 0787 6565700 during the day.

If you're not going to be doing any serious off-road stuff, then the OE BMW panniers are very good. I'd be less than happy about doing any long distance touring without hard luggage, purely from a security point of view.

If you do buy the BMW luggage, make sure that you fit them properly, ie adjust the mushroom bolts so that the panniers fit on tightly. Otherwise, you might well find them travelling down the road independently of your bike.

Thanks, I will. I will probably Loctite the bolts, too.

Top box

I am looking to get a top box ? BMW brand, Givi or similiar type. Any advice?

:)

Get the kit to move the top box to the pillion seat position. It improves the handling but makes it more difficult to get your leg over :D , especially if you have short legs

Pack over night kit in one side only then you will only need to carry one box into the hotel try to sort hotels with secure parking.
One week, you really shouldnt need top box but if you take it empty then its ideal for storing helmet and jacket while siteseeing and fill it with goodies on the way home.

All the best

Thanks.

For comparison with used prices, what is the normal price for new panniers from BMW, with inner bags, and coded locks, does anyone know?

I don't want to move the box to the pillion position, just in case I end up offering any rides to any locals I may happen to make the acquaintance of on the way.

You never know...

OK, thanks for the advice, all. I got the BMW panniers and bags, so am all set to go.

Well, when I work out where to go, that is...

Glad you're happy with them & pleasure doing business with you. Good luck on the trip, we look forward to the pics.

Likewise.

This is a big adventure for me, and I am excited. I will definitely post the pics on here, and keep people posted.
